Professor of voice and opera and professional classical singer, Susan Mohini Kane truly bridges the gap between the university and the world. She performs with local symphonies and opera companies as well as doing concerts and recitals with her own duo: Kristof & Kane. Her CD, A Moment of Joy is available on iTunes and she is working on another for health and wellness communities. Kane teaches Bridging the Gap and opera workshops, master classes, voice lessons, and courses at universities and opera training programs throughout the United States and Internationally.

A book that could change the world for people in the arts

This book is a must have for anyone entering into the world of singing for a living. Even more, it's valuable for anyone in any field of music or any other arts. In fact, there are sensible tips and guidelines that can be extrapolated for any walk of life. While it's aimed at university students heading into the real world, it's easy to understand, and would profiit serious high school students as well. It's so important to keep track of one's progress and experiences. Over time we forget and consequently leave out experiences from our resume that could help in landing the job or jobs most wanted. Ms. Kane leaves no stone unturned, addressing body, mind and spirit with sensible methods for growth in all areas. Even an online site for sound bites and printing worksheets is included in this valuable book that could easily serve as a course textbook, again, usable at all educational levels.

Required reading for any emerging artist

By writing this book, Dr. Susan Kane has successfully clarified the process through which singers determine their destiny and their future as performing artists with an honest, practical and forthright tone. With a clear focus on self-awareness, authenticity and self-determination, she guides the participant through practical exercises (like how to build a repertoire list and practical answers to questions in auditions), reflective SWOT analyses (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in and to our performing arsenal) and gives thorough and well-researched insight into how to become more successful as an emerging professional. The book is filled with worksheets that encourage assessment of skills, and the author has an interactive website where examples can be downloaded for future use. This is a book that should be on every young (and not so young) singer’s bookshelf, to be referenced before every audition season, every job interview and each recital or concert. The information found in the book is specific to singers but can easily transfer to any young person as they head out of college into the working world.

I cannot recommend this book enough

This book is an invaluable asset to singers on the verge of their career, and those who are struggling to find their audience/stage! It offers current information and avenues to make money as a performing artist in today's everchanging work-place. Kane provides structured and achievable advice while encouraging singers to remain true to their artistry and identity!
I am a performer and a teacher and have already purchased this as a gift for students embarking their journey in "the real world". I cannot recommend this book enough! Thank you, Susan Kane, for taking the time to help others find their path to singing and a career in the 21st century!
