Review

“Fight for power takes off in the immediate moments following the cliffhanger ending of The Rule of Three . . . will appeal to those who are interested in post-apocolyptic scenarios.” ―VOYA

“The struggle for survival in a world suddenly bereft of technology continues . . . As the community's sole pilot and therefore crucial for surveillance and reconnaissance, Adam's all too aware that in this post-apocalyptic world, his community is an island of haves in a sea of have-nots . . . The philosophical questions and killer ending will prime readers for the next book.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Just as good as the first book!
By Celeste Pewter
Full review:
I really, really liked The Rule of 3 last year - it's my go-to book, whenever I'm asked for recommendations for reluctant male readers - so I leapt at the chance to read and review the second book in the series, Fight for Power.

Author Eric Walters reconnects us with Adam sixty-six days after the events of the first book, but it feels like an eternity since life has been normal for him, Herb and the residents of Eden Mills. The residents are continuing their struggle for survival, but things have quickly becoming acrimonious in a place where survival of the fittest is law.

Whereas Walters focused on the systematic collapse of societal normals in The Rule of 3, Fight for Power is very much centered on answering the "what happens now?" of a post-apocalyptic scenario. Adam, Herb and others now have to decide how to continue functioning as a society, and their intrinsic values in this survivalist world. Herb is very much all about self-preservation, while Adam shows an empathy that readers will both understand and worry over.

Though Fight for Power isn't as necessarily urgent or action-packed as the first book, Walters asks a number of philosophical questions that will undoubtedly provoke readers to think and question as they read. Parents and educators should also take advantage by discussing some of the scenarios presented by Walters, and ask their students how they would react in those situations.
Final verdict:
I had a ridiculously good time reading Fight for Power. It was exciting and well-written, while also giving Adam, Herb and the rest of the group, the type of story that continues their personal journeys, while also encouraging readers to come back for the final installment.

(Also, THAT ending!)

I highly recommend this book for fans of the first trilogy, fans of action-adventure novels, and I also recommend this book for educators and parents who are looking for books suitable for reluctant readers.

Yes, the world that Adam and his cohorts are living in is a tough and demoralizing one. But it's his resolve, bravery and resourcefulness in the face of such dangers, that makes him an engaging and compelling hero who will draw readers in.

Developing Characters
By Michael Philliber
Society continues to disintegrate in "Fight for Power," the second volume of the "Rule of Three" series by Eric Walters. The story line follows Adam, his mother, Herb and the neighborhood into darker waters, deeper drama and a sinister spin at the end. It is an easy read written for teens that picks up where the last volume left off, and leaves the reader looking forward to the final installment.

There are ethical twists, hard decisions and compassionate actions pulsing through "Fight for Power" that will bring the reader to ask themselves, "What would I do in this situation?" Again, as Walters follows the theme from the previous book, it is a "life-boat" scenario, pushing for serious decision-making. The question that crops up in subtle, and at times obvious, ways is, "What makes us moral human beings in inhuman and immoral settings?" One gets the impression that the author has touched, and been touched, by this question in concrete ways, possibly in the environment surrounding the Kenyan orphanage he co-founded.

This dystopian account continues to be free of profanity and sexual engagements. And yet it ably addresses adult topics of life, death, survival and communal flourishing. This will make a great summer read for teens and young adults plodding through the summer blahs and out-of-school ho-hums. And parents may be interested in encouraging their kids to read this work for the purpose of fostering mature discussions with their middle and upper school children. I recommend the book.

Apocalypse Lite
By Al Hence
This continues the competently written (but not outstanding) story of suburban apocalypse. All the computer chips in the world (so far as the characters know) have failed more-or-less at once resulting in a general social collapse. The 16-year old POV character pilots his Ultra-Lite
in support of his barricaded neighborhood. It is staffed with pretty much stock characters featuring Herb "the guy who knows stuff" (e.g. Hienlien's competent man). In this volume we learn more of Herb's mysterious background and more about the plight of those outside the neighborhood walls. It also sets up the sequel. Because this is a YA novel the sex and violence are throttled way back, both are present neither is graphic. Unfortunately it has the common problems of the middle book in a trilogy. Ideally it would stand alone while still carrying forward the overall story arc. But too often the middle book mostly marks time until the concluding installment. That is the case here. It's not absolutely vital to have read the first book but it would help.
