Comprehensive stitch guide that is built to last

I'm a big fan of Knitting VISUAL Quick Tips by Sharon Turner, and I have come to expect that Wiley's VISUAL imprint will have great step-by-step photos. As with the Crochet Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia (Teach Yourself VISUALLY Consumer), Knitting Stitches VISUAL Encyclopedia instead assumes the reader has the basics down, so don't expect to see those photos or illustrations.

The book is organized into ten chapters: Knit and Purl Patterns; Rib Patterns; Bobbles and Textured Stitches; Slipstitch Patterns; Twist-Stitch Patterns; Cable Patterns; Drop-stitch, Yarn Overs, Eyelet, and Lace; Borders and Edgings; Creative Stitches and Combinations; and Color Knitting (which is further subdivided into Stranded Color Patterns, Intarsia Patterns and Motifs, and Color-Slip Patterns). The Appendix includes a key to pattern abbreviations and stitch symbols. The stitch symbols key also includes a description of how to formulate the stitch (e.g., "K3tog on RS: Knit 3 stitches together as 1.").

What I like about this book
The book is well organized, making it easy to find a stitch you liked later.

Each stitch is photographed in a vibrant swatch and includes both pattern abbreviations and a stitch symbol chart.

While the stitch guide includes some of the "old faithful" stitch patterns you would expect to find in a knitting stitch guide, there are also some new (to me) combinations.

Most of my other knitting stitch guides primarily use aran or off-white yarns, so this book is definitely more attractive to look at as there is a broader color palette for the swatches.

The Introduction. That's right, I said it. You shouldn't skip through this 3 page section, which outlines each chapter and explains the techniques used. It also describes (briefly) how different yarn choices will impact the look of the stitch and provides some tips about calculating your yarn needs for a project. In particular, if you don't know your Intarsia from your elbow, read the explanation of the different color knitting techniques.

I worked up a swatch using a few random stitch patterns that caught my eye. I didn't have any problems following the patterns so I would imagine they are all clearly written.

I especially liked the stitches in the Stranded Color Patterns and Color-Slip Patterns subsections of the Color Knitting chapter, the Bobbles and Textured Stitches chapter, and the Drop-stitch and Yarn Over patterns.

The hardcover binding will make sure this book lasts through all of the abuse a good stitch guide will get.

What I don't like (or what's missing)
I am a bit disappointed when a stitch guide lacks illustrations or photos explaining some of the techniques for a newbie. This deficit was, in my opinion, mostly redeemed by the explanations given in the Introduction.

Although the book is hardcover, it doesn't easily lay flat while knitting and reading.

Maybe I'm just not that excited by Intarsia in general, but I didn't see myself making anything in that section (a teapot with a flower? a robot?). If you are really into cutesy Intarsia, though, you will probably love these 17 stitch patterns.

If you are unfamiliar with stitch symbol charts, you may find it annoying to flip back to the glossary instead of having a key on each page.

Summary:
This book is definitely a solid stitch guide to add to (or start) your stitch guide collection. It is well organized, visually attractive, and includes stitch symbols and abbreviations for each stitch. The book explores a range of stitch types and is built to last as a hardcover. Beginners or inexperienced pattern readers might find it challenging since there are no illustrations or pictures to walk you through the basics. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars, with the caveat that a beginner will need to be adventurous or have another resource book in her/his library to use this book effectively.

I recently downloaded this to my Kindle. The pictures of the stitches are great and the book is set up wonderfully but I am giving this a 3 star not because of the stitch content (I would actually give it 5 stars for that) but the 3 is because in the Kindle edition of this book the section in the back that has the symbols, their meanings, and how to's for each one is so small and blurry it is impossible to read them. The text size cannot be changed for this section for some reason (and I have tried to do this on my Kindle, the Kindle app on my phone, and the Kindle app on my tablet) but the text in the rest of the book can be changed. Although I have other hardcover stitch books, I was really interested in having one on the Kindle so I would always have a stitch book with me and this works great for that but you really need to be fluent in the chart symbols and how to do all of them.

The only thing missing...

I have found this book to be very helpful to look up unfamiliar stitches while reading patterns new patterns. The only thing missing?? An alphabetical index of the stitches. Its rather painful to have to look at the 7 pages of table of contents and look at all the stitch names to find the one you want. I just find it hard to believe that a reference book such as this does not have an index.

About the Author

Bruce D. He is the author, with Maia Szalavitz, of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, a bestselling book based on his work with maltreated children.

Maia Szalavitz is the author of Help at Any Cost: How the Troubled-Teen Industry Cons Parents and Hurts Kids (Riverhead, 2006), which led to state investigations into the industry as well as federal legislation. Every mother should read this!

I'm a mother of three and a social worker for foster children and their birth families. I started reading this book because of my profession but became more interested and found the book far more applicable when I applied it to myself as a parent and to my daughter who is pregnant. Dr. Perry and Ms. Maia said what I have been thinking for a long time: too much television, too little neighbor to neighbor interaction, too little value on the grandparents. Yes, as they said, poverty is related, as is crime, death rate, violence and the loss of great minds because we have lost the value of face to face interaction, caring and inclusion.

This book made me want to go out and keep on giving to others. It feels good to give! There are so many benefits for our children, their parents, grandparents and our society. In the final analysis, this book made me feel that I could make a difference. :).

Born for Love and Hope

"We are all born for love. It is the principle of existence, and its only end," quoted from Disraeli,is how Perry and Szalavitz start an exploration of how children learn to love-or not. Perry is an international expert on how childhood trauma, abuse or neglect leaves developmental gaps in a young girl or boy's brain. More importantly, he tells what we can do about it. Szalavitz is an award-winning science journalist who creates a coherent narrative of the ten children and their families who are the characters of this book. No work of fiction is as compelling as entering the lives of these young children and their journey to young adulthood.

Humans need the capacity for empathy-without it, the ability to love is lost. These children are hungry, even desperate for love, and hungry for learning, but the deficits in brain development due to the trauma, drama and chaos of the first four years of life, during which their brains were literally organizing, resonates down their early years. Perry makes the case that all the "Golden Rules" in major religions show how "morality depends on our ability to see the world from other points of view. And this starts with mirror neurons." Right there is what makes this book unique; what we experience as religious, moral and ethical choices in life all begin with what our brains are capable of. "Empathy is the basis of compassionate action...the foundation of trust, which is necessary for the successful functioning of everything from relations to families to governments and, yes, to economies."

What I love about Perry's approach, though, is the lack of moralizing. Here's what happened to this kid's brain and when; here's the consequences of that, now and in the future. Let's find out where the gaps are in brain development, fill in the gaps, and help the kid make better choices. It's a simple process of science-based assessment and treatment, with positive outcomes. It's not easy, but doable. Children, families, schools, neighborhoods, county/state child welfare systems, all benefit when the kid moves from raging and hurting to soothing and healing.

Perry doesn't offer psycho-pablum, such as "all kids are resilient, they'll get over it." When early trauma is intermittent and moderate, a child can be resilient; but when the trauma is sustained and severe, the child is vulnerable, not resilient, and needs help delivered in a way that maximizes brain change and healing. These children need connection, need claiming and consistency, not shuttling them from one foster family or treatment center to another.

Perry prescribes six "R's" in his approach: playful engagement needs to be rhythmic (to affect deep down in the brainstem), repetitive (creating patterns), relational (safe, stable), relevant (geared to child's developmental stage, not chronological age), rewarding (pleasurable) and respectful (of the child, family and culture). Without intervention, they rage, act out, hurt themselves, their families, other children, end up in detention, homeless, insane or in prison. As a society, we need to make good choices about how we spend our charitable and tax dollars on child trauma and neglect; otherwise these children make brain-traumatized choices that cost them and us much pain, injury, money and lives. No empathy breeds impaired, broken and lost relationships; loving, thoughtful care creates well brains, good choices and productive lives.

About the Author
Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. She is author of Death and the Emperor: Roman Imperial Funerary Monuments from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius, winner of the Vasari Award.

Walter B. Denny is a Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In addition to exhibition catalogues, his publications include books on Ottoman Turkish carpets, textiles, and ceramics, and articles on miniature painting, architecture and architectural decoration.

Frima Fox Hofrichter is Professor and former Chair of the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute. She is author of Judith Leyster, A Dutch Artist in Holland’s Golden Age, which received CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.

Joseph Jacobs is an independent scholar, critic, and art historian of modern art in New York City. He was the curator of modern art at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, director of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and curator of American art at The Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey.

David L. Simon is Jetté Professor of Art at Colby College, where he received the Basset Teaching Award in 2005. Among his publications is the catalogue of Spanish and southern French Romanesque sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters.

Great book for anyone with a passion for art.

Large thick book with a very through history of Art. In reality, it's really a study of human history through the stories expressed through art. It has many large, high quality pictures of fine art from around the world, as well as pottery, architecture, and other disciplines. If you're not a student and just want to study, experience, or just to look at art, this is a great book for you. If you are a student, you're probably required to study this at some level of academia.

Very nice art history book for class. I didn't know what to expect when getting this. It turned out to be a fun learning experience. A lot of great historical and beautiful artwork that I haven't even seen before was in this book. I also like how they analyzed the artists and artwork. Very specific and professional detail in hear. Would recommend for any art historians out there.

Fantastic pricing for textbook. Condition of book was very good. The textbook itself is amazing such that I almost wish that I had bought it outright. A very impressive comprehensive study of Western Art. Still have a long way to go to incorporate more women, but they've made much progress since original publication.

About the Author
Dr. Binh Nhu Ngo is the Director of the Vietnamese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and has been teaching Vietnamese there since 1992. He was born and educated in Hanoi, and earned his Ph.D. in linguistics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He has taught Vietnamese and linguistics at Moscow University, and since 1992 he has taught at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) and at a number of universities and colleges in the United States. He has served as the Vice-President of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL) and represents Harvard University at the Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA). His other books include Speak & Read Vietnamese (Simon & Schuster) and Continuing Vietnamese (Tuttle).

Good for people willing to put in a lot of effort

I'm startled by the reviews that are on this book. I am Vietnamese-American, and I wasn't raised speaking Vietnamese. I'm a heritage "speaker" which means that I can understand most of it, but I'm absolutely dreadful at pronouncing Vietnamese words and I didn't learn to read and write it as a child.

I finally buckled down in April to work on my Vietnamese. I looked at the reviews of this version of the book as well as other versions. I had my mother (who is 100% Vietnamese) sit down and try to teach me from what we could see in the Look Inside. We bought the book as a result.

Was it a struggle? Oh, absolutely. But my Vietnamese has improved by leaps and bounds.

To be successful with this textbook:
1) Have a native teacher with you. This book is pretty much incomprehensible to anybody who only speaks English and is trying to teach himself. Bonus points for having a native teacher who speaks the Ha Noi dialect. My parents grew up in South Vietnam (for obvious reasons), so they don't actually speak the dialect in which this book is written. Most of the time, it's not a big deal (generally, Sai Gon and Ha Noi dialect speakers can grasp what the other dialect's words mean), but there were a couple of times where both my parents were surprised by some Vietnamese words which were totally new to them.
2) Have a ton of patience. Just because you read the dialogue doesn't mean that you'll understand what's going on in it. The vocab is placed after the dialogue in each chapter, and when they start putting in narratives, the vocab is after those, too.

I think that if I didn't already understand spoken Vietnamese, learning from this book would've been substantially more difficult. I guess I'd just advise working at a slow pace. This book is used for Year 1 of Vietnamese at Harvard (the author is a Harvard employee), and anybody learning from it should expect the work to take 9+ months.

My mother also used to be a French teacher, so she's comfortable taking the role of a language teacher. I learned to read, write, and speak French when I was 7. I've formally studied French, Spanish, Latin, and Mandarin. I have a degree in Spanish. I've learned a smattering of Portuguese and Italian as well, enough to get around. Vietnamese is my eighth written language, I guess, and it's hard (but still a lot easier than Mandarin). I'm really dreadful at tones.

Don't pick up this textbook and expect to become fluent in Vietnamese in a day. It's a lengthy process that will take time, dedication, and a lot of studying. If you're not willing to put in the work, don't buy it. But if you sincerely wish to learn Vietnamese and are willing to put in a lot of effort, pick it up.

My girlfriend is Viet, and she mentions this book starts off by already taking in Viet. But don't focus on how to pronounce all the tones of Viet easily for beginners. They do in the back but it's soo poorly done, I had a hard time my self, this book is really confusing to use this book as a learner with 0% knowledge of Viet. I wish I never bought it,

This second edition capitalizes on comments and suggestions collected over 5 years from world-wide readers. A warm "merci" to all of you! There are several key additions such as a small-signal model of the active clamp forward converter or the ac-response analysis of the QR flyback converter. Small-signal transfer functions of BCM PFC stages are also there, in current mode or voltage mode. Another important addition is the derivation of all rms currents (with a step-by-step approach so that you can follow the flow) of the three basic cells when operated in CCM but also in DCM. Results are presented in a clear and ordered form, also available in dedicated Mathcad files for those of you who want to put these equations at work. This book is for engineers who believe, as I do, that SPICE or simulation in general, can be an excellent assistant in intermediate design steps before going to the bench. Understanding power conversion theory through equations further verified by simulations and practical results are ingredients for a success that I wish to all my readers!

About the Author
Christophe Basso is an Application Engineering Director at ON Semiconductor in Toulouse, France, where he leads an application team dedicated to developing new offline PWM controllers specifications. He has originated numerous integrated circuits among which the NCP120X series has set new standards for low standby power converters. Further to his 2008 book "Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs", published by McGraw-Hill, he released a new title in 2012 with Artech House, "Designing Control Loops for Linear and Switching Power Supplies: a Tutorial Guide". He holds 30 patents on power conversion and often publishes papers in conferences and trade magazines including How2Power and PET. He regularly teaches professional seminars at APEC conferences in the US.

Christophe has over 20 years of power supply industry experience. Prior to joining ON Semiconductor in 1999, Christophe was an application engineer at Motorola Semiconductor in Toulouse. Before 1997, he worked as a power supply designer at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, for 10 years. He holds a BSEE equivalent from the Montpellier University (France) and a MSEE from the Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse (France). He is an IEEE Senior member.

Get This Book!!

Well my heavily used first edition copy of this book has now been happily replaced by this wonderful state-of-the-art second edition update. The first edition book has served me so well as one of the most helpful reference collection books to allow me to bridge between theory and actual practice. Now arrives the second edition with corrections, updates and additions that seek to make this tool even more helpful. Has it delivered? Oh yes! The first big improvement is its size. It is slightly taller but significantly wider, which has allowed for a great improvement in formatting. The flow of reading the second edition is fantastic. Where needed mathematical details have been elaborated and are clearer and easier to understand. New additions to switching topologies have been added to the already vast collection.

A subject of this complexity and variability is not easy to distill in a manner which can be easily understood, digested and made practical for the modern day student or established engineer who wishes to design and simulate power converters using SPICE. Mr. Basso very eloquently and most thoroughly covers a huge swath of switch-mode topologies that is easy to understand for both students entering into power conversion and practicing engineers who need a refresher. I have tried other books, either they are over the top theoretical with long drawn out mathematics that leave one hanging in limbo between theory and reality, or they are general and provide very few tools on how to "do it yourself". As a prerequisite to following this book you will need an understanding of algebra, calculus and basic SPICE simulation skills. The book provides you with a link to download many of the SPICE and MathCAD example files in the book as well as demo simulation software.

Is the book perfect? Perfection is quite subjective and in the case of this complex subject, it is hard to please everyone, especially picky engineers. I think Mr. Basso has been able to present the concepts, design and practical steps of using SPICE to design power converters in a balanced middle ground fashion that the vast majority of student and engineers can greatly benefit from. It neither goes to deep into theory nor does it simply skim across the subjects, but provides a hands-on practical mathematical and SPICE based approach to designing modern day power converters.

Every topology that is cover in this book has at least one example design that goes step-by-step through the design process, from calculations of parameters and component values to average and transient SPICE simulations of the design. He goes into the minutia of what to look out for in the particular topology and what topology is correct for a given requirement. If you are a power conversion engineer, or want to be versed in that field, this book is invaluable.

The practical examples covered in this book are of power converters in the low to medium power range. If you are looking for a book with examples to design and simulate very high power converters, this book may not be for you, but it will provide you with most of the building blocks and foundation needed for you to tackle that field.

You will not be disappointed with the money and time you invest in this book. Get It.

My favorite power supply reference

This is my go-to reference book for power supply design. The new edition offers some nice improvements over the first. Most notable is the new layout, which makes it a little easier to use, however their is plenty of new content. It does a great job at bridging the gap between the simple fundamentals that many other books offer and practical real world applications, while offering intuitive ways to predict real world performance through simulation.

It is nice to see a book that covers the design of the entire converter (input filter, clamps, snubbers, etc.) through real world application examples. For instance, a boost converter for a car audio amplifier starting with only the customer requirements and carrying the reader through the entire design process including component selection and thermal considerations. Although it only focuses on the basic topologies (boost, buck, buck-boost, flyback, forward), the approaches demonstrated for deriving their equations and models make it is easy to derive the equations and models for their derivative topologies (push-pull, SEPIC, Cuk, half/full-bridge, etc.).

I recommend this book to all of my colleagues!

Best Single Book for Switching Power Supply Design

As someone who has been involved in switch-mode power supply design for over 30 years, I highly recommend this book.
Before Christophe Basso's first edition, I was constantly digging through multiple reference papers, seminar notes, and specific chapters of various text books to find the information I needed to design and simulate a power supply. His first edition captured all of the design information and simulation techniques in one well-written and useful book. My copy is worn as I have referred to it daily as a design reference.

His second edition builds on this excellent work with additional small signal modeling and analysis, with more SPICE and MathCad examples. Christophe also maintains a website with tools and references. You will find him accessible and worth the read.

The quality of print, larger page format, and better book construction of the latest edition are also appreciated.
