In the ten-year interval since the first edition of this volume went to press, our knowledge of extracellular matrix (ECM) function and structure has enor mously increased. Extracellular matrix and cell-matrix interaction are now routine topics in the meetings and annual reviews sponsored by cell biology societies. Research in molecular biology has so advanced the number of known matrix molecules and the topic of gene structure and regulation that we won dered how best to incorporate the new material. For example, we deliberated over the inclusion of chapters on molecular genetics. We decided that with judicious editing we could present the recent findings in molecular biology within the same cell biology framework that was used for the first edition, using three broad headings: what is extracellular matrix, how is it made, and what does it do for cells? Maintaining control over the review of literature on the subject of ECM was not always an easy task, but we felt it was essential to production of a highly readable volume, one compact enough to serve the the student as an introduction and the investigator as a quick update on graduate the important recent discoveries. The Haidao Suanjing or Sea Island Mathematical Manual, is one of the "Ten Classics" of traditional Chinese mathematics, and its contents demonstrate the high standards of theoretical and mathematical sophistication present in early Chinese surveying theory. The Haidao composed in A.D. 263 by Liu Hui, established the mathematical procedures for much of East Asian surveying activity for the next one thousand years. The contents of the Haidao also testify to the ability of the Chinese to systematize mathematics and hint at the use of proof in Chinese mathematics, a concept usually associated with Greek mathematical thought.Frank Swetz provides an annotated translation of the Haidao and an analysis of its surveying problems. In particular, he details surveying techniques and undertakes a mathematical exposition of the Chinese chong cha solution procedures. The Haidao is a testimony to the ingenuity and skill of China's early surveyors and its author, Liu Hui. This study complements and extends the findings of Swetz's previous book, Was Pythagoras Chinese? An Examination of Right Triangle Theory in Ancient China.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3—In the tradition of Mo Willems's Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (Hyperion, 2003) and Herve Tullet's Press Here (Chronicle, 2011), Soffer's charming duck hero breaks the fourth wall with panache. Duck just wants to be left alone to bask on the beach, but those pesky readers keep turning the page, unleashing snow, pinching crabs, a bird pooping on his head, and even pirates! Originally published in Israel, this translation from the Hebrew flows with the interactive rhythm of storytime, and the appealing colors and flowing lines of Soffer's humorous illustrations are a perfect match for the text. VERDICT An ideal read-aloud that will appeal to a wide audience.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

Review

“[A] playful story that has readers wreaking havoc on a duck's island getaway. Relaxing with an ice-cream cone in a beach chair, Duck couldn't he happier. "Whoa! What just happened? Who turned the page?" he shouts as his ice cream goes flying. Realizing that readers are responsible, Duck begs them to stop turning pages, but books don't work that way, and Duck is soon fending off pinching crabs, inclement weather, and pirates who want to turn him into soup. ... Handsomely executed colored pencil illustrations play up Duck's growing indignation, and Soffer doubles down on the schadenfreude with an ending that lets readers ruin not just Duck's day but that of the pirates as well.” ―Publishers Weekly

“The interactive picture-book concept isn't new, but Soffer pulls it off in a satisfying way, with spot-on grade-school humor. . . . Meta storytime fun.” ―The Horn Book

About the Author

This is Gilad's first book as author and artist. He lives in Tel-Aviv with his partner and their three daughters.

Review

“The current book is an introductory text that starts at the level of the neophyte and gradually brings the student to the level of current research. … The target readers include advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics as well as graduate students in other fields. … This is an appealing book, well-written and thoughtfully organized.” (William J. Satzer, MAA reviews, maa.org, January, 2016)

“This book does not limit itself by any means to be just an introductory level textbook, aiming actually to be a comprehensive, self-contained reference text for mathematical epidemiologists. … The presentation is example-based, well thought out and very carefully organized. … The book has the clarity of a textbook while having the depth of a monograph, the author always being successful in conveying the content of a topic regardless of its difficulty.” (Paul Georgescu, zbMATH 1333.92006, 2016)

Epidemiological Mathematical Techniques
By Joseph J Grenier
An Introduction to Mathematical Equilibrium

Springer Berlin Heidelberg New York

Joseph Grenier MD PhD MPH

This a detailed probability book on population models in public health. Proofs, theorems, graphs, set theory, epidemic models are used to help understand mortality and morbidity rates. The mathematical approach is complex and not an introduction to the field. The formalism and definitions in symbolism is not presented for epidemiologists. Public health professionals will find it a difficult read, restricting its use to specialized mathematical and statistics circles.

Other books from Wiley by Gail (e.g.. Encyclopedia of Epidemiological Methods) are more readable and useful. I would use the book as a reference for running computer simulations concerning predicted outcomes. This is also not a book for a graduate course in Epidemiology.

Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, by Chris Hedges, Joe Sacco

Named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com and the Washington Post

Three years ago, Pulitzer Prize–winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco set out to take a look at the sacrifice zones, those areas in America that have been offered up for exploitation in the name of profit, progress, and technological advancement. They wanted to show in words and drawings what life looks like in places where the marketplace rules without constraints, where human beings and the natural world are used and then discarded to maximize profit. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is the searing account of their travels.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2012: From the dusty plains of North Dakota to the coal-veined hills of West Virginia to the desolate and ravaged streets of Camden N.J., Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist/journalist Joe Sacco introduce us to the nation's "sacrifice zones"--those regions where, in the authors' view, corporate greed has run wild, and the locals have suffered. A unique mashup of investigative journalism, man-on-the-street reportage, graphic novel, and anti-corporate manifesto, the result is a riveting and often chilling account of America's forgotten zones. The balance between Hedges' narrative nonfiction storytelling and Sacco's intimate and very human sketches is surprisingly effective. And the stark depictions (both written and visual) of abandoned coal mines and empty downtowns and crumbling houses are heartbreaking, as are the stories of people struggling to survive. This is a special and important book. --Neal Thompson

Review
“Sacco’s sections are uniformly brilliant. The tone is controlled, the writing smart, the narration neutral…. This is an important book.”
—New York Times Book Review

“An unabashedly polemic, angry manifesto that is certain to open eyes, intensify outrage and incite argument about corporate greed…. Through immersion reportage and graphic narrative, the duo illuminate the human and environmental devastation in those communities, with the warning that no one is immune…. A call for a new American revolution, passionately proclaimed.”
—Kirkus (Starred Review)

“[Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt] is, without question, the most profoundly disquieting (and downright shocking) portrait of modern America in recent years, and one that is essential reading for anyone wanting to comprehend the quotidian struggle of what sociologists called ‘the underclass’. To describe the book as Dickensian in its horror-show reports of frontline industrial decrepitude and socio-economic dysfunction is to engage in understatement… Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is unapologetically combative and profoundly J’accuse. And though many a conservative think-tanker could try to punch holes in its arguments no one can remain unmoved or unsettled by its brilliantly documented reportage from the precipice of a society that prefers to turn a blind eye to its nightmarish underside.”
—The Times (Saturday Review)

“[B]rilliant combination of prose and graphic comics."
—Ralph Nader

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (Nation) is as moving a portrait of poverty and as compelling a call to action as Michael Harrington's ‘The Other America,’ published in 1962.”
—Boston Globe

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a gripping and thoroughly researched polemic.”
—Grantland

“[A] growling indictment of corporate America.”
—Financial Times

“…a unique hybrid of investigative journalism, graphic novel and polemic.”
—Denver Post

“…a heartfelt, harrowing picture of post-capitalist America.”
—Guardian (UK)

“The book is a primer for every American who is overwhelmed by the uncertainty of the stock market, who wonders where America's muscle went, and how much heavy lifting our kids will face.”
—Seattle Times

“The tales therein—both the intimate personal ones and the big sociopolitical ones—are as unsettling as they are impossible to put down.”
—Philadelphia Weekly

“Eloquently written and embellished by spare, desolate drawings from Joe Sacco, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is accessible and deeply uncomfortable.”
—Metro (UK)

“…provides close accounts of some of the country's most devastated communities, "sacrifice zones." It ends with a detailed history of the Occupy protests and a declaration that "the mighty can fall.”
—Associated Press

“[B]rilliant.”
—The Capital Times

"Days of Destruction is a riveting indictment of America’s failures.”
—Portland Monthly

“This searing indictment of our unsustainable society is unsettling. To keep our chance for dignity, we must do our part to champion the organizers and whistleblowers, committee members and protesters. Amen. Pass the word.”
—Brooklyn Rail

"[H]arrowing descriptions…. Hedges tells the story, not only of the people but of the town, and despite the differences in setting, certain similarities show through: poverty, addiction, violence; but more than that, a long series of broken promises and mounting despair. Sacco illustrates these chapters with his distinctive, careful line drawings…. [A]n excellent piece of journalism -- engaging, troubling, and in its own way, beautiful.”
—TowardFreedom.com

“As quixotic as the quest may seem, Days of Destruction brings the rhetoric and the reality into a nobler focus after a very disturbing tour.”
—The Star-Ledger (New Jersey)

"It's rare that a book carries so much courage and conviction, forcing reflection and an urge to immediately rectify the problems."
—Bookslut

“A powerful social and political exploration.”
—Midwest Book Review/California Bookwatch

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a journey through contemporary American misery and what can be done to change the course, interpreted through the eyes of two of today’s most relevant literary journalists…. The graphics illustrate what words alone cannot, capturing a past as it’s told, where there’s no longer anything left to photograph.”
—Asbury Park Press

“[T]he radical disjunction between how Hedges and Sacco approach their subjects is fascinating and instructive. Hedges is at ease with the grand, sweeping Howard Zinn–moments of matchbook history…. And if sweeping, historical connect-the-dots is your cup of tea, then you will find Hedges deeply moving. But if, like Sacco, you distrust all history that does not have a face, a name, and a voice behind it, you will find more to call you to action in the voices that speak from the decimated landscapes of America’s deepest poverty, which we (like Dickens’s “telescopic philanthropists”) know even less well than we do the sufferings of peoples halfway around the world. Together, Sacco and Hedges might just have created a form that can speak across divides unbridgeable without the supplement of graphic narrative.”
—Public Books

“…a bleak, fist-shaking look at the effects of global capitalism in the United States.”
—Joe Gross, Austin American-Statesman

“This is a book that should warm the hearts of political activists such as Naomi Klein or the nonagenerian Pete Seeger. And cause apoplexy among the Tea Party and its fellow travellers…. Sure, it's a polemic, but it's a polemic with a human face.”
—Globe and Mail (Canada)

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a harrowing account of the exploited American underclass…. It is their stories that shape Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to be a mesmeric indictment of an America that has failed its populace…. From the title alone it is evident that neither Hedges nor Sacco remain objective or shy away from the palpable condemnation of capitalism and the American government. Regardless, they develop an accurate account of the despondency that plagues and divides American culture. This is an imperative read in an era where widespread economic depression and grief reign supreme…. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is powerful and remarkable, arguably one of the best publications of the year.”
—PopMatters.com

“This is an important book.”
—Winnipeg Free Press (Canada)

“It is a fascinating journey… This book hit me in the gut. It will move you to engage in battle.”
—Ed Garvey

“[R]ead Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to know what is happening in this country.”
—Caffeinated Muslim

“… a scorching look at communities burned out not by foreign bombs but by American capitalism.”
—The Stranger (Seattle)

“When their narrative culminates in Zucotti Park, readers will feel just as outraged as the protesters portrayed on the page.”
—Barnes and Noble Review

“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt examines how corruption and greed have shaped the history of the United States in an unfortunate way…. This is an excellent book for those who actually need a reason to revolt, and should be read by anyone seeking public office.”
—San Francisco/Sacramento Book Review

“Be prepared for an emotional experience without a happy ending. Be prepared to be defensive. Be prepared to be angry. Be prepared to be ashamed…. [T]he book is accompanied by sections that are a graphic novel approach to the individual stories of the real people interviewed in these zones of despair. What is so overpowering, and discussable, in these biographies is that they read as much like a confessional as they do a history…. Can there be anything more important to discuss?”
—Book Group Buzz, Booklist Online

“This is indeed an extraordinary, must read book.”
—OpEdNews.com

“This may well be the most important book of the century, and yet Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt barely scratches the surface of our reality. But even that small peek into the system is mind-numbing. This book has the potential to wake us up—really Wake Us Up—to what is happening. The question is this: once we recognize the size and strength of the enemy, will we be so intimidated that we roll over and play victim? Or will we take a stand when and where we can, in small ways, alone or together, to start taking down the behemoth?”
—Curled Up With a Good Book

Wow
By Chris
Chris Hedges has a great capacity for evoking the misery and hopelessness that is increasingly common in this country. This is often a depressing book--but it is strongly based in reality. Periodically in the book there are--provided by Joe Sacco--illustrations and comic book depictions of the lives of the individuals profiled in the book.

In the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota, Hedges describes one of the poorest and most socially dysfunctional areas in the United States. Why are Pine Ridge residents in this predicament? Hedges finds the answer in the subduing of Indian resistance in the late 19th century. The basis for traditional Indian culture was wiped out, including the buffalo. The US government successfully used racist and murderous military violence to subdue native resistance. That violence included rape; Hedges quotes George Custer's chief of scouts as telling the historian Walter Camp that captured squaws in the 1868 raid on Washita were used as sex slaves. Custer selected one for himself. Custer was a big part of the US military operations designed to steal the Black Hills region from the Lakota Sioux. The Black Hills had been granted to the Indians by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie but gold, coal and other minerals were soon discovered in the region. A great many avaricious white people flooded into the region. The US military soon went into operation to steal Black Hills for white economic interests. The US government suppressed Indian language and culture. They instituted elected reservation governments that were easily controlled by the US government. An example of these puppet governments is pointed to by Hedges: the Pine Ridge tribal council in the 70's under the thuggish, corrupt leadership of Dick Wilson, a man very friendly towards white economic interests wishing to exploit Indian land. Wilson was a violent enemy of the American Indian Movement.

Hedges profiles several Pine Ridge residents including people who have set themselves toward living constructive lives after years of destructive activities like alcoholism and gangs. According to Hedges, such people have gotten on the right path by participating in old Lakota rituals like sun dances and sweat lodges. Hedges writes that this rediscovering of roots has had a strong influence in helping Indians fight against the tendencies towards destructive lifestyles that Pine Ridge's poverty and hopelessness encourages.

The next chapter is about Camden New Jersey. Camden is almost exclusively inhabited by persons of color, mostly African Americans. The city's residents face bleak job prospects, the housing and infrastructure have long crumbled and crime, drugs and prostitution afflict the city. One of the people examined in this chapter--citing reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer and other newspapers-- is George Norcross III, the insurance magnate and a dominant force in state politics. The Camden County Democratic Party appears to be the most docile instrument utilized by Norcross's political machine. Camden itself has been under the control of an unelected state government board since it went bankrupt a decade ago. Norcross seems to exercise very substantial influence with this board. He is in the habit of threatening to destroy local and state government officials and politicians who cross him; he has been caught on tape doing so using very profane language. If they cross him, these politicians run the risk of compelling Norcross to use his substantial influence to try to defeat them at election time. While Camden's resident's deal with contaminated drinking water, crumbling infrastructure and a downsized police force, the politicians he supports make sure that tax dollars flow to him and his business allies through government contracts and millions of dollars in subsidies for urban renewal projects. Hedges writes that while Norcross is a Democrat, he is also an ally of New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie.

The next chapter is about southern West Virginia. This region has been economically ravaged, experienced massive population flight and has many towns that are almost ghost communities. In this miserable environment, some residents have become drug addicts. Strip mining and mountain top removal mining seem to be the only thriving industries in the area but these create dreadful externalities. These operations spread toxic soot all over surrounding communities. Hedges examines the resistance of the town of Sylvester to the pollution sprayed upon it by a subsidiary of Massey Energy. This pollution severely contaminates the water supply, soil and air; the area is prone to high rates of cancer, respiratory ailments and other medical problems. Elderly people are predominant among Hedges's interviewees in this chapter. For example there are the elderly women active in the fight in Sylvester and the retired man refusing to bow to pressure to leave his ancestral property surrounded by mining operations. This retired man and another anti-mining activist, a woman in her early 40's, report being subjected to various acts of intimidation including drive by shootings, repeated vandalism to their property and killings of their pet dogs.

Next is Imoakalee Florida, a center of immigrant agricultural labor, mostly Latino. The immigrants are housed in horrible conditions; subjected to extremely low pay; back-breaking labor; and serious respiratory problems, acute pesticide poisoning and other aliments caused by exposure to pesticides like Methyl Bromide. It is not uncommon for these workers to be held in literal slavery, have their paychecks stolen and subjected to physical abuse. The legal system in Florida appears willing to prosecute cases of slavery but the immigrants are very afraid to come forward for obvious reasons. Hedges interviews activists from the Coalition of Imoakalee workers, a very impressive organization--he describes their struggle to secure a minimum level of decent conditions.

Hedges ends his book with a stop at Occupy New York's home base. He argues that the Occupy movement and historical figures--including Crazy Horse and Eastern European communist era dissidents--are models for resistance to the corporate tyranny that afflicts us. Hedges paints a vivid picture of the landscapes he and Sacco visit and the people they talk to. Sacco's illustrations are engaging.

"Grapes of Wrath" with annotation and pictures
By Janet M Hanson
Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" was seen to be a literary project that humanized the people ground down by the Great Depression. I would like to think that this book by Hedges and Sacco does the same, only it is not a story. It's what Hedges does best: it is reporting. Sacco's drawings are highly effective and I would like to think that they may bring thoughtful discussion about this topic to people who would not be likely to slog their way through an essay by Hedges, Chomsky or Henry Giroux.

I particularly like the inclusion of Pine Ridge because it implicitly illustrates how long America's habit of discarding inconvenient people has existed. But all of it is good.

IF you have never read Hedges expect to be discomfited. Sit with it and keep reading. Know that this may not represent your reality but it is real enough for too many people. In the back of your mind, in the dark of the night, do you fear that this reality will be the reality of your children and grandchildren? I certainly do.

And again, with out trying to and almost begrudgingly, Hedges demonstrates a deep spirituality and paints a manifestation of the best of Christianity though certainly not that which you will see illustrated all too often by people who would call themselves religious leaders.

Read it preparing to be challenged. I think this book AND I HOPE THIS BOOK will find it's way into various college and high school classrooms. It has the possibility to take many students beyond the read and regurgitate style of so many classrooms today.

IT'S KILLING ME to see this book take it on the chops for how well it translated to electronic media. I guess if you are in the decision phase of buying this book then I would say buy the real thing not the virtual model. The way the written content and the graphic content interfaces is very much an important part of this design. It's a cutting edge format. And it is unfortunate that that did not turn out to be a great consumer experience for those who plunked down the dollars for the e-model. It's well worth it...buy it as book. I may buy it to give to people. Just read it.

A bit disappointed
By Toobzymom
I am curious how deep some of the individuals with the rave reviews have actually delved into this book?! Yes, it is 'beautiful' and exhaustive in its recipes and techniques, and in many ways it is an indispensible tool for any pastry student. However, this book is full of errors. The typos, indicating a lack of adequate proofreading, I would not expect in a book of this professional and teaching level, but the greatest transgression is the errors in the recipes themselves - incorrect baking times and temperatures, incorrect quantities - I am only four weeks into a pastry course and we have found numerous errors with recipes that require adjusting. I was truly excited to try most of the amazing recipes, but now am concerned I will be wasting time and money except on recipes we have "pre-tested" in the course I am taking. I must say, overall I am disappointed that the book is not living up to my expectations. Do not judge this book by its cover...sadly, the cover is better than the contents.

Errors found but still a good book.
By Ricky E. Daniels
Found four errors, three mathematical in the recipes. I contacted the publisher and was to hear back but I never did; for example the croissant dough recipe, the flour amount is listed in grams but obviously should have been kg.

Save your money

Used this book for my C.A. Baking and Pastry class. There seemed to be more recipes with errors (or perhaps just bad recipes overall) than good, usable recipes. A few of the recipes were quite good, but I hesitate to risk wasting my money on recipes from the book that were not tested in class (unless I compare them with another similar recipe first, and who wants to go to that trouble?). I heard Bo Friberg's book The Professional Pastry Chef: Fundamentals of Baking and Pastry, 4th Editionis excellent and plan to invest in it for myself for Christmas.

Under My Skin: A Stark Novel (Stark International), by J. Kenner

Jackson Steele and Sylvia Brooks are back in the powerful finale of a provocative, sizzling-hot trilogy set in the world of J. Kenner’s beloved Stark novels: Release Me, Claim Me, and Complete Me.

He’s the only man I’ve ever loved, and the one man I can’t bear to lose.

Jackson Steele is my light in this world. Charismatic, bold, and always in control, he knows what he wants and how to get it—and absolutely nothing stands in his way. His hold on me is magnetic, his claim on me complete, his kiss my ultimate escape.

We both harbor dark secrets that could tear our lives apart. Though we’ve tried to bury our pasts, there are certain people who won’t let us forget. But the closer danger comes, the brighter the fire between us burns—our ecstasy consuming and soothing us both.

There’s no telling what lies ahead, but I know that Jackson never gives in without a fight. I’d do anything he wants to keep him safe, give him anything he needs. And now that we’re in deep, nothing can make me run.

Under My Skin is intended for mature audiences.

one

There is peace in these moments between sleep and wakefulness. In the soft minutes that seem to stretch into hours, warm and comforting like a gift bestowed by a benevolent universe.

This is a world of dreams, and right now it is safe. It is right. And I want to stay here, wrapped tight in the comfort of his arms.

But dreams often turn into nightmares, and as I move through the corridors of sleep, dark fingers of fear reach out to me. My pulse pounds and my breath comes too shallow. I curl toward him, craving his touch, but he is not there, and I sit bolt upright, my skin clammy from a sheen of sweat. My heart pounding so hard I will surely crack a rib.

Jackson.

I’m awake now, alone and disoriented as a wild panic cuts through me. I’m afraid, but I don’t remember why.

Too quickly though, it all rushes back, and as the memories return with wakefulness, I long to slide back into oblivion. Because whatever horror my mind would fabricate in dreams couldn’t be any worse than the reality that now surrounds me, cold and stark.

A reality in which the world is crumbling down around my ears.

A reality in which the man I love desperately is suspected of murder.

With a sigh, I press a hand to my cheek, my memory sharpening as I shake off the haze of slumber. He’d brushed a kiss over my cheek before slipping out of our warm cocoon and into the chilly morning air. At the time I’d been content to stay behind, snuggled tight in the blankets that still held his scent and radiated the lingering heat from his body.

Now I wish I had roused myself when he did, because I don’t want to be alone. Alone is when panic creeps closer.

Alone is when I’m certain that I will lose him.

Alone is what I fear.

And yet even as the thought enters my mind, the solitude is shattered. The bedroom door bursts open, and a dark-haired, blue-eyed bundle of sunshine races toward me, then leaps onto the bed and starts bouncing, her energy so vibrant I laugh despite myself. “Sylvie! Sylvie! I made toast with Uncle Jackson!”

“Toast? Really?” It’s work, but I manage to keep my voice perky and upbeat despite the fact that fear still clings to me like cobwebs. I give Ronnie a quick, tight hug, but my attention isn’t on her anymore. Instead, I am focused entirely on the man in the doorway.

He stands casually on the threshold, a wooden tray in his hands. His coal black hair is untidy from sleep, and he sports two days of beard stubble. He wears flannel pajama bottoms and a pale gray T-shirt. By every indication, he is a man who has just awakened. A man with nothing on his mind but the morning and breakfast and the bits of news that fill the paper tucked under his arm.

But dear god, he is so much more. He is power and tenderness, strength and control. He is the man who has colored my days and illuminated my nights.

Jackson Steele. The man I love. The man I once foolishly tried to leave. The man who grabbed hold and pulled me back, then slayed my demons, and in doing so claimed my heart.

But it is those very demons that have brought us to this moment.

Because Robert Cabot Reed was one of those demons, and now Reed is dead. Someone entered his Beverly Hills home and bashed his head in with a decorative piece of carved ivory.

And I can’t help but fear that the someone was Jackson, and that soon he will have to pay the price.

We arrived in Santa Fe late yesterday afternoon, both of us feeling light and happy and eager. Jackson had intended to spend the weekend with Ronnie and then go to court on Monday in order to set a hearing on his petition to formally claim paternity and establish that he is Ronnie’s father in the eyes of the law. That plan, however, was sideswiped when local detectives met our plane, then informed Jackson that he was wanted back in Beverly Hills for questioning in Reed’s murder.

The afternoon shifted from a happy, laid-back reunion to a frantic flurry of activity, with calls between New Mexico and California, lawyers squabbling, deals churning.

At the end of it all, Jackson was permitted to stay the weekend, on condition that he go straight to the Beverly Hills Police Department Monday morning. In truth, Jackson could have garnered much more time—unless the police wanted to actually arrest, their leverage was limited—but his attorney wisely advised against it. After all, playing games isn’t the way to win either police cooperation or public opinion. And while we don’t yet know what physical evidence the police have collected, there’s no lack of motive for Jackson to have killed Reed.

Motive.

The word sounds so clean compared to Reed, who was a dirty, horrible man.

Not only had he abused and tormented me when I was a teen, but he’d recently threatened to release some of the vile photographs that he’d taken of me back then if I didn’t convince Jackson to stop trying to block a movie that Reed wanted green-lit. A movie that would expose secrets and deceptions—and that would thrust Ronnie, an innocent child, into the middle of a very public, very messy scandal.

Did Jackson want the movie stopped? Hell, yes.

Did he want to protect me from the horror of seeing those pictures flashed across the internet? Damn right.

Did he want to punish Reed for the things he’d done to me so many years ago? Absolutely.

Did Jackson kill Reed?

As for that one—I truly don’t know.

More than that, I’m not allowed to ask. According to Charles Maynard, Jackson’s attorney, it is very likely that the police will interview me, too. And there is no privilege for girlfriends. Which means Charles wants me to be able to honestly say that Jackson was under strict orders from his attorneys, and that he didn’t say anything to me about whether he did or did not kill Reed. Not yes, not no, not maybe. Just nothing.

Nothing.

I know what that means, of course. Nothing is code for probably.

Nothing is code for that way you can’t later incriminate him.

Nothing is code for we’re trying to forestall the worst.

Just thinking about it makes me tremble, and I sit up, my back against the headboard and my pillow tight in my arms as I watch the man I love set the tray and the newspaper on the small table tucked in beneath the still-curtained window.

It’s a small task, but he performs it with confident precision, just as he does so much else in his life. Jackson is not a man to let circumstance get the better of him, and he is not a man who will let an injury go unavenged. He is a man who protects what he loves, and I know with unwavering certainty that the two things he loves most in this world are his daughter and me.

He would, I’m certain, kill to protect either of us, and that’s a thought that sends a little shiver of pleasure through me. But it’s tempered by fear and dread. Because Jackson would go even further; he’d sacrifice himself if he thought it would protect us. And I’m horribly afraid that’s exactly what he has done.

And, honestly, if Jackson ends up behind bars, I don’t know if I’m strong enough to bear the guilt.

He comes over to sit on the edge of the bed and is immediately assaulted by a three-year-old cyclone demanding to be tickled. He smiles and complies, then looks at me. But the smile doesn’t quite warm his ice blue eyes.

I reach for him and take his hand in mine. How many times in the hours since we arrived have I searched for the perfect words to soothe him? But there are no perfect words. I can only do my best. I can only just be here.

“Anything about you in there?” I ask with a nod to the paper that he’s left on the table.

“No, but since that’s the local Santa Fe paper I wouldn’t expect there to be.”

I frown. “Do you want me to look?” I’m not talking about the local paper, and he knows it. I’m offering to hop online and scope out the various gossip sites from back home, especially those that focus on Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and all things murder and celebrity.

He shakes his head, and his response only deepens my frown. He told me yesterday that he didn’t want anything to mar this time with Ronnie, and I get that. But we’ve already got the cloud of a murder hanging over us—and knowing the gossip means being prepared.

I argued as much last night, but I’m willing to make my case again. In fact, I’m opening my mouth to do just that when he presses his finger to my lips. “I looked this morning,” he says gently. “There’s nothing.”

“Really?”

“Really,” he confirms. He squeezes my hand, then holds out his free one for Ronnie. “I got on my tablet and looked while this little one was making toast. Didn’t I?” he asks, as she scrambles into his lap. “Didn’t I?” he repeats, then tickles her until she squeals and says, “Yes! Yes!” even though she clearly has no idea what we’re talking about.

“Your witness seems a little tainted to me.” I fight a smile. He’s such a natural dad, and the ease with which he’s slid into the role awes me a bit.

“Maybe. But the testimony is all true.” He kisses the top of her head, then pulls her close, the action so full of wild, heartbreaking emotion that it almost shatters me.

“You should go on outside with Grammy,” Jackson tells the little girl. “Fred’s probably wondering where you are.”

At the mention of the puppy, her blue eyes, so like Jackson’s, go wide. “You’ll come, too?”

“Absolutely,” he promises. “Let me talk to Syl while she drinks her coffee and then I’ll come find you.”

“And eat your toast?” she asks, her earnest question aimed at me.

“I can’t wait for the toast,” I say. “I bet it’s the best toast ever.”

“Yup,” she confirms, then shoots out of the room like a rocket.

Jackson watches her go, and I watch Jackson. When he turns back, he catches me eyeing him, then smiles sheepishly. “It’s hard to believe sometimes,” he says. “That she’s really mine, I mean.”

I think about the little girl’s dark hair and blue eyes. Her cleverness coupled with a vibrant personality and fierce determination. “Not hard to believe at all.”

I had hoped to coax a smile, but still he just looks sad.

“There was really nothing?”

Murder, Mystery, Passion, Love, Betrayal, and HOT sex! What more could you ask for?
By Itsy Bitsy Book Bits
* ARC provided for an honest review *

Under My Skin by J. Kenner is the third and final installment in the Stark International Trilogy and what a way to end it! This story has murder, mystery, passion, love, betrayal, and hot melt your panties kind of sex!

Sylvia Brooks and Jackson Steele are caught up in one heck of a mess and unfortunately that means that the hits just keep coming. All Sylvia wants it to love Jackson, finish her resort, and be happy. However, with Jackson arrested for the murder of Reed and Sylvia not sure whether he did it or not she finds herself trying to prevent it from all spinning out of control.

Jackson wants to just love Sylvia, start a life with his daughter Veronica (Ronnie), get to know his newfound brother and help Sylvia finish the resort. In the face of being wanted for murder he has to rethink each step that he takes and it doesn’t help that he has a temper, which could be construed as proof he killed Reed. He is desperate to prove his innocence while keeping Sylvia’s secret, but is finding he not only has to prove his innocence to the world, but maybe Sylvia as well.

As the pressure mounts and Jackson begins pushing Sylvia away, will she have any choice but to go back to her old way of life, adding some new tattoos? When Jackson finds he can’t control anything in his life will he go back to the ring causing even more trouble for himself? If he goes to jail where does that leave Ronnie?

Reed was a vile man who deserved what he got, but is it Jackson who gave it to him or could it be the person you least expected? In the midst of all the trials and tribulations, there is a new betrayal with the resort. Lines will be crossed, backs will be stabbed, and people will be hurt.

Sylvia and Jackson are doing the best they can to weather the storm, but sometimes it’s just too much. Sometimes, no matter how much you love each other it’s best to go your separate ways. Will this be the case of our favorite couple? Will it prove to be more than either of them can handle or will they discover that leaning on the one you love is sometimes the best method?

This story has all the passion, love, heat, and nitty gritty, provocative, sex you have come to love from the first two books. In addition, I felt J. Kenner showed more connection, romance, and fight in this book. I thought she did a kick butt job of helping us to realize that your past doesn’t always define your future and if you can find a balance between the two you can continue to grow.

Just OK--was expecting it to be better
By DSG
First, the good: I enjoy J Kenner's writing style and I was quickly engaged in the story as it picked up exactly where book 2 ended. I couldn't help but root for Jackson and Sylvia and enjoyed their journey as they both experienced some personal growth.

But, there is also some bad: This series is basically a repeat of Nikki and Damien complete with abusive childhood and accusations of murder. Surely there are other plots that would have worked? I thought the 2 mysteries in the book--who killed Reed and who was sabotaging the resort-were glaringly obvious and not really a mystery. Finally, the book was very repetitive. Jackson and Sylvia have something traumatic happen or have a fight and the only way they can work through it is by having sex and this is always the way that she leads into the sex scenes. It became really boring after a while and I found myself wishing for the end of the book.

If you are a fan of J Kenner and have already read the 1st 2 books in the series then it is worth the time to read the final book in the series. If you have not yet started this series, I think there are other books and series that are more deserving of your time and money.

Fabulous Ending!!!
By Ashley S.
Under My Skin gets 4.5 stars! I absolutely loved the ending that we receive from Ms. Kenner as she definitely did all of her characters justice. From the first two books, we see and feel the overwhelming love and lust that Jackson and Sylvia share, but this third and final book shows just how far they will go to protect one another, even if it means breaking their own hearts. We start the book immediately where On My Knees left off, with Jackson and Sylvia in New Mexico visiting his daughter, Ronnie. This, of course, comes after Jackson is approached on the tarmac by the police who then tell him he is a suspect in a murder. From this point, it is a rollercoaster of highs and lows and so much indecision and uncertainty that I started getting worried we wouldn't get our HEA. I needed an HEA because, after three tumultuous books, I can't imagine any other couple who deserved it as much as our H and h. "You see me," he says simply. "You know that I'd do whatever is necessary to protect you. To protect Ronnie." He draws a slow breath. "But a jury won't see that. That's my heart, baby. And my heart is only for you." He reaches over and strokes my cheek. "It will be okay." Swoon!!!

No spoilers here because Under My Skin is truly an amazing book that you have to experience for yourself. But, believe me, you will get frustrated and want to slap both characters when they hide things - I know that I certainly did! However, all of this builds up to one of the best endings I have read in this genre. I can only hope that Ms. Kenner continues this series so we can revisit these characters again! Well done on another amazing trilogy!
