A forecasting masterpiece

This is a great book on forecasting oracle performance. I had been tasked with capacity planning work before; I wish I had read this book before undertaking those kinds of work. The book starts with explanation on the need for forecasting, types of forecasting methods available and goes on to explain the methods. After explaining a method/model, the author provides examples on how to use the method. Thankfully the explanations and the theories were not brutal for me; you will have to accept the formulas given and learn how to use them to your needs.

This book was not an easy read for me. It took several weeks (I admit, I was not reading it regularly) to read the book fully. I will have to do some real world exercises so I know how to apply the techniques in the book. It will be a while before I am fully conversant with the topics and the methods, but I am sure I will be much better off in the field of forecasting.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I have read in Oracle performance and planning topic.

It's something fresh about forgotten old

Being an IT person I like to read such methodological books to refresh myself.
Before starting this book I had a feeling that it was little bit opposed to the secret of Stephen Hawking books where he had just used one famous formula E=mc^2. This book looked full of overwhelming mathematical formulas.
However, author presented material in a very easy to digest way. All formulas are absolutely necessary for understanding the Forecasting approaches.
These approaches are universal and don't depend on particular Oracle version. It's everything about applying proper forecasting models depending on the Forecasting question and workload data collected against complex Oracle environment. It's very straightforward if you read it fully.
It's MUST for those who are facing questions like" What would happen if the workload was doubled in three months? Does it make sense to buy 6 more CPUs to maintain agreed SLA? etc etc.
Book audience is
1) Oracle DBAs
2) Project managers/ Architects
3) Oracle developers

This book is quite unique on a market, because most of existing Oracle books describe Performance Troubleshooting.
Knowledge from this book will not become obsolete with new version of Oracle.

A fantastic book. Not one of those that you'll be able to get through over a weekend but is one of those books that you constantly go back to for reference or validation. Some of the techniques take the mystery out of capacity planning and forecasting performance. Excellent.

About the Author

Eli C. Minkoff is Professor of Biology at Bates College. He received his bachelor's degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Columbia University and his MA and PhD from Harvard University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Society for the Study of Evolution, Dr. Minkoff has published several books as well as many articles in scholarly journals and encyclopedic reference works.

Pamela J. Baker is Professor of Biology at Bates College. She holds two Bachelor of Science degrees (from the University of Wales at Swansea, Magna Cum Laude, and from Bates College, Cum Laude). She also holds an MA and PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research focuses on the function of the immune system in bone diseases such as periodontal disease and on the investigation of new antimicrobial agents.

Nice try, but (sadly) no cigar!

The authors write in an engaging and animated style, and the "issues approach" to biology introduced in this text is an excellent way to introduce the material. Non-science students in particular will benefit from such interesting-- and sometimes even exciting-- demonstrations of the importance of the topics covered.
Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to its ideal, and does so right from the start. Chapter One, for example, is so full of mistakes, oversimplifications and downright silliness that I would be embarrassed to assign it to my students! There are errors of dates, misleading definitions of concepts (sometimes even conflicting with the books own glossary), and inept treatments of non-scientific concerns (ethics and religion). The "thought questions" throughout the book frequently tend to be written in leading ways that suggest which answers will be "acceptable." Although the book tries hard to bridge "the two cultures," the reader is constantly reminded that science is one thing (defined by its rigorous method), and all other human efforts are "other" (nonfalsifiable, therefore "anything goes"!)
As a biology text, this is quite successful. Topics and explanations are accurate, clear and simple. It is a pity that the authors' laudable attempt to connect the science to significant social, ethical, and political issues is not similarly clear and well-informed. I fear that in the long run such carelessness may do more harm than good.

A BASIC BIOLOGY BOOK

A very basic biology book aimed at the high school level or perhaps Junior high. Subjects are lightly discussed but there are hundreds of photos, diagrams and charts that illustrate the text very well. All the basic concepts and varieties of life are well treated, if somewhat briefly.

This is a good beginners book for the biological world of life on earth.

We home school and we used this book for 10 grade high school science. Not being strong in science myself it covered in great detail what I myself didn't know. Good quality and detailed. There is a web sight and code you can enter after each chapter for a on line test. IT then scores it for you. You have the ability to retake the tests as many times as needed.
