Introduction Every now and then during our devotional time my husband Paul and I reread the poem I wrote for him back in 1964. During these times of renewal and prayer, we talk over the events of our lives and share burdens we have for ourselves and others. Very often, we realize that the Great Shepherd has once again reached out and carried us through the day as we spend these introspective moments together.

If the pleasure of sharing these thoughts anew has taught us anything, it is this: that God’s Word is true. Our Heavenly Father is faithful and will never leave us or forsake us. As we come to Him daily, willing to be shaped and directed, His Word gives guideposts of clear direction. Almost everything we read, see, and experience shows us in some way that, although we do not visibly see God, He is with us. Over centuries of time others have looked back to understand that God’s Spirit and presence were there, even when they felt alone.

In our quiet moments of reflection, in the fellowship of others, and even in dreams, God opens the doors to our hearts. This is what happened when I originally wrote the poem, "Footprints". After hours of wrestling with the darkness of doubt and despair, I finally surrendered to Him and, in the early morning light of peace, wrote the poem as result of that spiritual experience.

Listen for the gentle stirring of God’s grace in your own mind and soul as you read these verses of encouragement. Each of us is different in our spiritual need, just as each of our days is different. God wants to place His signature on your life in a unique way. As you spend time, even just a few moments each day, reflecting on His Word, it will help you to know Him better. Spiritual growth is not so much what we have done, but the feeling of love for Him we put into everything we do. It is not so much in knowing about God that we grow, but in getting to know Him in a personal, relational way. It is in becoming "a friend of God" as Abraham did that we grow in His grace, talking with Him as our companion along the way. Letting God sift our thoughts and plans through the standards of His Word. May these verses encourage you anew each day as you walk with Him. God Is With Us ... In Our Dreams One night I dreamed a dream. Some of our dreams can have a powerful effect on us. All of us have, at one time or another, awakened laughing or fretful—and all because of a dream. The Bible tells us about many people who had dreams and visions that were given to them by God ...

[Jacob] had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. —Genesis 28:12

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. —Genesis 37:5

At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." —1 Kings 3:5

An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." —Matthew 2:13

One day at about three in the afternoon [Cornelius] had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" —Acts 10:3

During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." —Acts 16:9 Some of our dreams are disappointing, but these are "wishful thinking" dreams, things we come up with in our own minds, circumstances or situations that we wish would happen. Only a small portion of these kind of dreams ever come true. In fact, these dreams can be harmful if we allow them to fill us with false hope ...

This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. —Jeremiah 23:16 Yet we should not ignore our dreams. God will sometimes use our dreams to assure us of his promises or to tell us something about himself. And when God does speak to us in dreams, he will also help us understand them ...

[God] said, "Listen to my words: "When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams." —Numbers 12:6

I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. —Joel 2:28 Jesus left his disciples with a great promise that is true for us today: "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

God’s presence with us is a reality. Acts 2:17 also tells us that God will pour his "Spirit on all people." As we dream our dreams with the knowledge that God is with us, we will begin to see things as Christ does and dream dreams inspired by the Holy Spirit that are worth re-telling and following.

An extremely moving, absorbing and powerful true story.
Stan Telchin in answering a telephone call from his daughter Judy received the worst possible message that a Jewish father could hear from his beloved daughter. The words that revealed that she had accepted Jesus as the Messiah.
To his eternal credit, Stan Telchin did not choose the path of so many in isolating and disowning his daughter. Instead he chose the path of love and tried to fully investigate her beliefs with a clear goal of trying to systematically disprove any element of truth that Judy might have in believing Jesus to be the Jewish Messiah.
Stan's studies were in depth and lengthy. The story follows him in his goal and surrounds an extremely dramatic family story in seeking out the very roots and foundations of their Jewish faith.
Stan decided to ask himself a number of questions along his journey, such as `can a Jew accept Jesus as the Messiah and remain a Jew'.
Five other basic questions formed the basis of his enquiries;-
1) Do I believe that God really exists ?
2) Do I believe that the Jewish Bible (The Tenach) is the divinely inspired word of God ?
3) Does this Bible prophesy about a coming Messiah ?
4) Is Jesus the Messiah ?
5) If he is, what does that do to me ?
Follow Stan Telchin as he pours over the Scriptures and the history of the Jewish people and their relationship with Christians through the ages. See how he comes to terms with the hostility of many elements of the so-called Christian church, the anti-Semitism emanating from so many, and his arrival at the Truth.
Stan, despite being the ultimate critic and with such a heart-felt agenda to restore his Jewish daughter from Christianity, finds that he too can only arrive at one decision. That being that all the Scriptures and all the prophesies can only prove one thing...Jesus is in fact who He says He is...the Messiah.
Stan's acceptance of this fact and the birth of his own Christian/Messianic faith (or however you wish to describe it) is treated with hostility by the vast majority of his Jewish `friends' and he finds isolation and hatred amongst those who once accepted him with open arms.
This is an enthralling story. Beautifully written and can be read in one day. Do yourself a favour and get this book, irrespective of your religion or faith. Everyone could do with studying the examples of those described herein. Best wishes.

A Great Introduction to a Jewish Perspective on Jesus

Some religious Jewish people will be offended by this book and that cannot be helped. Any book which presents a controversial topic is going to get slammed. But the fact is, and Stan presents it very well and very readably, there is a strong case to be made for the Messiahship of Jesus. Stan shows how one Jewish person, with a good Jewish education and strong ties to the Jewish community, looked at the evidence and was convinced. Those who do not find the evidence presented by Stan convincing can nonetheless see his sincerity throughout. With a Masters degree in Hebrew Bible, I feel qualified to say that the passages from the Hebrew Bible that Stan discusses are almost all translated very well and Stan's interpretation is sound in nearly every instance. I have seen this book change the lives of Christians and Jews alike and have given away dozens of copies myself.

Excellent!

Despite the negative reviews from some readers, the reasons they give are subjective. (i.e. - they disagree with Mr. Telchin's conclusions). Nevertheless, this is an excellent book on the topic at hand (one family's search for the Messiah). Saying you disagree with their conclusions doesn't make this a bad book, or even a dangerous one.
On the contrary. I found the level of research done by Mr. Telchin extraordinary. The accusations of misinterpretation notwithstanding, he addresses a lot of scriptures which not a few people (Jews included) have accepted as speaking of the Messiah, and gives "his" reasons for believing that they point to the historical Jesus.
I found it fascinating, and illuminating from a Jewish perspective of Jesus' Messianic claims.

OLD SCHOOL HARD SCIENCE FICTION

The hard science fiction novel Encounter with Tiber is an excellent example of the genre. It is literally packed with interesting science, engineering, and technological explanations.

It is basically two interwoven stories. The human part is in the present and near future (say, 60-70 years) and is concerned with the activities and people involved with the revived human attempts at space exploration and colonization. Two factors spur their efforts on: the privatization of space technology; and the reception of signals from a planet in the planetary system of Alpha Centauri A, part of a binary star system that’s about 4.3 light years (about 25.4 x 1012 miles or 43.0 x 1012 kilometers) away from Earth. The planet of origin of the signals is eventually named Tiber and its inhabitants become known as Tiberians.

The alien or Tiberian part of the book describes the extraterrestrials’ history, culture, biology & physiology, and political institutions in some detail. Because their planet is about to be rendered uninhabitable within a couple of centuries, they have been sending out robot probes to nearby star systems in a search for a suitable planet or planets to which they can migrate. Such a probe has previously examined Earth, and the transmitted data is so promising that a “manned” expedition is sent to reconnoiter the planet in person.

These two parts are woven together by a historian who is on the human starship that’s traveling to the Tiberians’ home system in the late 21st Century.

One character in particular, whom I guess was supposed to be a sympathetic character, was the astronaut and astronomer Chris Terence. Initially, he seems to be a highly competent astronaut and a sympathetic character. However, he proves himself to be supremely arrogant; he apparently thinks that the taxpayers should be happy to spend billions of dollars (with no expectation of any return whatsoever) solely so that scientists like him can "do science" and discover "what matters." In a later part of the book, Chris Terence proclaims that, in the 19th Century, the entire American West from Texas to Washington (state), should have been left "unspoiled," a fertile playground for anthropologists, geologists, and naturalists. Such an elitist hostility toward development turned me profoundly against him. But, hey, that's just my opinion. There is one scary possibility, however. Could Terence's elitist "pure science" attitude be NASA's official position today? That certainly would explain their less than stellar performance, over the last forty years, in advancing real (manned) space exploration, industrialization, and development.

I thought that it was quite astute of the authors to have the Tiberians’ actions on Earth serve as the seeds of various religious myths that would eventually be passed down through the millennia by humans. This was not done explicitly, but it was easy to pick out certain scenes (the runaway lander, the pillar of fire, the flood, the burning bush, the hovering lander(s), and the Tiberians’ weapons) and imagine how the orally transmitted accounts of these events could have been distorted and embellished over time.

I've noticed that, in about 20% of the reviews of Encounter with Tiber, readers are complaining about the science, engineering, and technology that are liberally scattered throughout the book. Well, HELLO...! That's why it's called SCIENCE fiction.

About the Author
Leonard B. Glick is a cultural anthropologist with a medical degree and a doctorate in anthropology. He is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Hampshire College and is the author of Abraham's Heirs: Jews and Christians in Medieval Europe (1999).


J. Mitchell Miller (Ph.D., University of Tennessee, 1996) is a Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice. He has also served two years (2000-2002) as a Visiting Professor at Moscow International University in Russia and as Director the Graduate Studies Program in Drugs and Addictions at the University of South Carolina (2002-2006). He was Editor-in-Chief of the 3-volume Encyclopedia of Criminology (Taylor & Francis, 2005) and has authored or co-authoredfive textbooks andone monograph and46 articles and book chapters. He hasalsoserved as Editor oftwo journals (Journal of Crime & Justice, 1999-2002; Journal of Criminal Justice Education, 2005-2009). The National Criminal Justice Honor Society named him National Advisor of the Year in 2002, and he is actively involved in both national and regional criminology and criminal justice associations (ASC, ACJS, ASA, etc.).

A Great Teaching Resource...

"Criminology", co-authored by Leonard Glick and J. Mitchell Miller, is a comprehensive and well-written entry-level guide to the complex and controversial topic of criminology as practiced in the United States. "Criminology" is specifically organized to facilitate the work of the instructor and the student.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.

Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.

"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.

I needed this book for class, but didn't want to pay the hefty price tag attached to it. So I ended up buying used on Amazon for the first time. I saved well over $100 doing this. The book was in great condition. No pen marks or highlights. Definitely recommend!! I cant tell enough people how much money you save when you use Amazon as an alternative for buying and renting textbooks.

Too many mistakes

This book has an extraordinary number of errors. The synthesis of methamphetamine (scourge of the west) is described according to a method used by bikers in the seventies. Rape is defined as forcible sex between a man and a woman. One of the causes of violence is a high sugar diet. Feminism can lead to violence. Descriptions of criminal law are weak and full of errors. This is a bad book.

This book is well-researched and has a variety of "maps" or visual representations to help students understand Latin America. Overall, the essays are really well-written and I find the different variety of maps fascinating.

Impressive and well-developed history of Latin American cartography

This book, edited by the historian Jordana Dym and the geographer Karl Offen, offers a superb example of an interdisciplinary approach. The fifty-seven articles/chapters, which make a review of Latin American history from the Sixteen Century to nowadays, involve topics ranging from environmental issues to landscape politics, including ideas of order, State-building, etnhicity, resistance, and urban planning. In addition, the edition is carefully presented with colorfull and detailed illustrations. In my opinion, this is an outstanding publication on Latin American cartography.

This is a classic book on the kinetic theory of gases first published in 1927. For the early history of kinetic theory, this book is par none. I use it to reconstruct the development of kinetic theory in the early years. This includes the mechanical picture of a perfect gas, Clausius' mean-free-path arguements, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with the H-theorem, van der Waals equation of state, kinetic theory for the coefficients of viscosity, diffusion and heat conduction, Brownian motion and specific heats. Much of the material is still good today, and some of it is not found in modern books.

An excellent text. I've started reading it and can already tell it is a classic. It's my first formal text on Kinetic Theory of Gases and I highly recommend to someone wanting to learn. Make sure you know basic Thermo.

Needs some improvement.

I am a bit sorry I bought this book. What I paid is too much for what it is. What it is is a book containing information that is readily available on the Internet. Now, I knew that would probably be the case, but I bought it anyway. There seems to be confusion between self-hosting and web service hosting. While the plugin information is somewhat helpful, the editing is not optimal, with repetition of poorly-phrased instructions and details. What is not explained well the first time does not improve with the repetition. It looks like it was cut and pasted a lot. I might buy this book at this price, but not the $45 I paid for it in the airport so I would have something to read on the plane.

Very Misleading Book

This book is misleading. At the end of most chapters it includes a reference to online videos and where you can find them on the WROX site. (So far so good.) It also says, "You will also be able to download resources for this lesson from the website." This is where it's misleading, because THERE ARE NO RESOURCES for lessons on the website. What there are is lists of WordPress plug-ins. There should be some text and images that would be used to produce the book's sample "Island Travel" site, but I cannot find any such resources.

If the way you want to learn a new piece of software is by following along on examples, you'll be disappointed in this book. It gives the misleading impression that you will be creating an "Island Travel" website. That's the impression you're going to get from skimming this book in a retail store. Then, after you've spent a considerable amount of time (too much time to return the book), you'll find that it is NOT what you bargained for.

Stay away from George Plumley!!!
