Racial Science in Hitler's New Europe, 1938-1945 (Critical Studies in the History of Anthropology)From University of Nebraska Press

In Racial Science in Hitler’s New Europe, 1938–1945, international scholars examine the theories of race that informed the legal, political, and social policies aimed against ethnic minorities in Nazi-dominated Europe. The essays explicate how racial science, preexisting racist sentiments, and pseudoscientific theories of race that were preeminent in interwar Europe ultimately facilitated Nazi racial designs for a “New Europe.”

The volume examines racial theories in a number of European nation-states in order to understand racial thinking at large, the origins of the Holocaust, and the history of ethnic discrimination in each of those countries. The essays, by uncovering neglected layers of complexity, diversity, and nuance, demonstrate how local discourse on race paralleled Nazi racial theory but had unique nationalist intellectual traditions of racial thought.

Written by rising scholars who are new to English-language audiences, this work examines the scientific foundations that central, eastern, northern, and southern European countries laid for ethnic discrimination, the attempted annihilation of Jews, and the elimination of other so-called inferior peoples.

"These essays provide a wealth of information about eugenics and scientific racism in areas that have been underexplored in the past. The book not only sheds light on Nazi racial ideology and policies, but also on the way that scientists and government officials in other parts of Europe responded to Nazi racial ideology and eugenics in the brief period of German ascendancy in Europe."—Richard Weikart, Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences (Richard Weikart Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences)

"This is an important book that makes a significant and original contribution to the development of the historical literature in this field."—Lisa Pine, Social History of Medicine (Lisa Pine Social History of Medicine)

The Comprehensiveness of Nazi Racial Concepts and Practices. Slav-Exterminatory Implications of GENERALPLAN OST Recognized
By Jan Peczkis
This work is an anthology of scholarly articles dealing with the practical, rather than theoretical, aspects of Nazi racial science. This is especially applied not only to the Germans, but also the Dutch, Norwegians, Danes, and, of course, the Slavs and the Jews.

INTRODUCTION

The ideas of Charles Darwin played a major role in the development of the idea of the innate and immutable inequality of peoples. (e. g., Isabel Heinemann, p. 38). Many nations at the time believed in scientific racism, and practiced eugenics. However, this should not be relativized. Authors Weiss-Wend and Rory Yeomans write of the preeminence of Nazi Germany in the field of racial science. (p. 14).

A perusal of this book is more than sufficient to indicate, to the reader, just how seriously the Germans took their racism and how ardently they tried to make it a practical reality in all their policies. It also becomes obvious that Nazi racism was not something left to ideologues or propagandists. Instead, it was widely developed by German anthropologists and other scientists. The Germanization of eastern territories, involving racial selection and resettlement, was widely held by mainstream German academia, and not just its fringes, as has been argued after 1945. (Heinemann, p. 42).

NAZI GERMAN GENOCIDE OF POLES

A little clarification of terms is in order. When the Nazis spoke of the Germanization of a territory, they were not primarily referring to the transformation of locals into adherents of German language and culture. They were talking about a removal of the locals, and replacement of them, with ethnic Germans.

It has not rarely been alleged that, whereas Jews were unilaterally condemned by the Nazis, there were Poles who could redeem themselves, in the eyes of the Nazis, by undergoing Germanization. While technically and superficially correct, this “Germanization” was recognized for only some 4% of the Polish population. (Heinemann, p. 44). Nor was even that, strictly, speaking, a Germanization. It was a re-Germanization of Polonized Germans. Clearly, this “Germanization” was not some kind of act of mercy to even a few Poles. It was an outworking of Nazi racial ideology, intended to “recover lost German blood”.

Although the Nazi treatment of Jews as a whole, and of Slavs as a whole, was different, especially given the increasing military reverses of the Third Reich, the intended outcome was similar. This fact was brought out by Isabel Heinemann, whom I now quote:

Rather, tellingly, during the so-called RuSHA Trial (1947-48)---which put RFK officials and SS racial experts in the dock—the prosecution declared the forced population transfers and “Germanization”, as experienced by Josef Rembacz from Zamosc and millions of other individuals, “techniques of genocide [that were] neither so quick nor perhaps so simple as outright mass extermination…[yet] far more cruel and equally effective.” (p. 51).

The items in brackets are in Heinemann’s quoted statement.

LONG-TERM NAZI PLANS FOR THE EXTERMINATION OF SLAVS

What if Nazi Germany had won the war? The Slavs in the east would have to go. Heinemann discusses the December 1942 Master Settlement Plan (GENERALSIEDLUNGSPLAN), which was an expanded version of Master Plan East (GENERALPLAN OST). Although the fate of tens of millions of people (mainly Poles and other Slavs) was not elaborated, Heinemann points out that their physical extermination was an unambiguous implication of the plan. She comments, “Although none of the plans made it explicit, it is evident that for the racial experts mass death posed a necessary condition for the entire Germanization process.” (p. 49).

From Booklist
Use of the adjective classical to modify, for example, architecture, dance, or education often denotes some form, style, type, or idea that is archetypal, foundational, ideal, or otherwise worthy of emulation, save by those who find the tradition limiting and wish to break out of the mold. Western cultures have often taken these classical forms from the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. Rather than simply defining some of these, this new reference work aims to provide a reliable and wide-ranging guide to the reception of Graeco-Roman antiquity in all its dimensions in later cultures. Two examples illustrate this aim quite nicely. The entry for Portico begins with a definition of the Roman original and follows its use in architecture over the centuries. It also describes its lasting legacy as a street-side arcade that finds expression in the front porches of houses today. Gesture and dance describes how ballet grew out of Renaissance-era textual examinations of ancient dramatists and the subsequent desire to combine regulation of physical expression and an ideal vision of the body. These entries are joined by some 500 others, written by an international team of scholars and ranging in subject from Architecture to Zoology, Atlantis to Sparta, and Aeneas to Xenophon. The Classical Tradition demonstrates that vestiges of ancient Greece and Rome are to be found throughout Western societies and often where they might least be expected. The emphasis on the reception history of this rich heritage, showing how generations have glorified, vilified, misunderstood, and retooled this inheritance for their own purposes, makes it a unique resource and sets it apart from such reference standards as the Oxford Classical Dictionary (2003). Recommended for academic and large public libraries. --Christopher McConnell

Review
Now here is a fabulous book--and a bargain to boot. Harvard has produced this gigantic volume, packed with color plates and essays by some of the greatest scholars alive, for the price of a couple of hardback thrillers. Better still, while The Classical Tradition may look like a work of reference, it's actually one of the best bedside books you could ask for. I know because I've been browsing around in it with immense pleasure...Certainly anyone even mildly interested in the Western cultural heritage will find The Classical Tradition a necessary purchase...[It] shows us how deeply the stories, iconic figures and ideas of antiquity succor our imaginations and still suffuse the world we live in. (Michael Dirda Washington Post 2010-10-14)

Make no mistake, The Classical Tradition is exceedingly delightful...An esoteric tool for the scholar on the face of it, The Classical Tradition turns out to be a guide for living here, now, in the 21st century as we find it. (Morgan Meis The Smart Set 2010-11-05)

A heady, hefty new single-volume reference...This is a browser's paradise...While Greece and Rome are no longer the foundation of education, classical scholarship has never been richer. (Steve Coates New York Times Book Review 2010-12-05)

The Classical Tradition is a guidebook of great erudition that is notably well written and unexpectedly compelling. It definitely is not another of those solemn introductions to "the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome." Instead it is a lively compendium of the manifold ways in which the enduring creations of the classical tradition, and the Greek and Latin classics, have been imitated, adulated, denounced and misunderstood--or understood all too well--over the past two millennia...Each article brings some unexpected insight or little known fact into the discussion, to illuminating effect...The scholarship is impeccable, but there is a donnish drollery in many of the articles...[A] marvelous guide. (Eric Ormsby Wall Street Journal 2010-11-22)

Anthony Grafton's entry on Historiography is as elegant and learned as everything he does. So elegant and learned, in fact, that I wanted to read each and every essay he had written in The Classical Tradition...Being lost in this book can be invigorating. (Brendan Boyle New Criterion 2010-11-01)

This absorbing and endlessly browsable compendium, edited by Anthony Grafton, Glenn W. Most, and Salvatore Settis, explores the richness of our classical legacy through scores of essays, alphabetically arranged by subject, that illuminate our past, our present, and probably our future as well. (Barnes and Noble Review 2010-12-03)

If, as some classicists say, our minds, bodies, government, law, medicine, arts, and fill-in-the-blank are unintelligible without an understanding of the Greco-Roman heritage, then do not waste another minute in ignorance and read this massive work, or at least selections of it, with urgency. A team of distinguished scholars--rivaling the number of warriors in the Battle of Thermopylae--dispenses knowledge and opinions on every imaginable topic under the Classical sun, connecting us to our ancient bloodline. (Christopher Benson First Things 2010-12-21)

[The Classical Tradition's] catalogue of contributors is a who's who of classical scholarship and includes some of the best known scholars writing for an educated non-specialist public, such as Ingrid Rowland, Simon Goldhill, Mary Beard and Glen Bowersock...[The editors] have sourced not so much anodyne entries on set-piece subjects--the staple of any encyclopedia--as stories brightly told that move through time to relate, for example, the achievements of the Roman poet Horace as they were seen in the ancient world, followed by an assessment of his immediate influence on Latin poetry, and his considerable impact on subsequent poets from Petrarch to Joseph Brodsky, with a slight pause over the case of Byron, who loathed Horace after their encounters in school...The publication of this Harvard guide not so much to the classical past as to the uses we have made of it--its various metamorphoses--is in itself a cultural event. Consider it one among many markers of a contemporary re-attachment to the classical past. (Luke Slattery Australian Literary Review 2011-03-01)

Eclectic rather than exhaustive, the compendium is less an encyclopedia than a buffet, in alphabetical order, of topics and glosses. There is, fortunately, no ideological consistency or purpose. The harvesting academics bring home a bumper crop to remind and instruct the reader of how the Classics are still central to the civilized intelligence; food for thought and primers of the imagination. (Frederic Raphael Literary Review 2011-03-01)

Whether priced by the pound or the page, this hefty compendium is quite a bargain. Lead editor Grafton...is perhaps the perfect captain for an ambitious work that attempts to capture, as the preface indicates, the "reception of Graeco-Roman antiquity in all its dimensions in later cultures."...More than 150 color images only add to the browsing pleasure. (B. Juhl Choice 2011-03-01)

Entries of commendable clarity and range include those on Homer, on pastoral, on Catullus, and on the Argonauts. This is a valuable reference work, especially for those new to the classical world. (Victoria Moul Times Literary Supplement 2011-06-10)

A stunningly wonderful compilation...Massive in length and unimpeachable in scholarship, it nonetheless manages to be endlessly absorbing, and often quietly entertaining into the bargain...I've pored over this book like a madman ever since setting hands on it and I've devoured enough to be certain that it's a masterpiece of concision, knowledge, judgment and dedication. It's clearly going to be a companion for life, and all the better for being well-nigh inexhaustible. (Bradley Winterton Taipei Times 2011-07-31)

This magnificent compendium explicates the outsized influence Greek and Roman society, literature and myth has had on the medieval and modern European ages that followed, and in turn on the imperial culture exported around the world. The Greek gods and their attributes--from wise Athena and fierce Ares to bibulous Dionysus--are key elements in a worldview we still look back on, at once alien and familiar. A wonder of research and writing that connects both casual browser and scholar to centuries of learning. (Barnes and Noble Review 2012-01-02)

Wonderful Reference Book
By Richard W. Hoover Sr.
Fills admirably the tremendous gap on the impact of classical events and personalities down to the present time. Was most recently useful to me while finishing up a talk on the American painter Benjamin West. Helpful articles, for example, on history painting, neo-classicism, Winckelmann, the Apollo Belvedere and on West too. Good and useful mentions also of West-contemporaries such as Cardinal Allessandro Albani, nephew of Martin XI, art dealer and the Curia' s curator/ art authority.

Grafton's great work is not only a detailed source, say, on the last generations, such as West's, to live and breathe Classical literature, history and art, but on the Renaissance humanists as well.

I would take serious issue with one of the foregoing critics who complained that he could not find "Greece" in the index. I think he misses the point: "The Classical Tradition" is not about Greece, but about it's impact. He should have persevered and read the entries under "Greek, Ancient; Greek, Modern; Greek Anthology; and Greek Revival."

However, as one detractor justly complained, this is a heavy book. I wish it had been published in two volumes! FIVE STARS!!!

A big beautiful sumptuous book
By James Conklin
Anyone interested in Western classical history would like this book. 1000 pages of entries from Aesthetics to Zeno's Paradoxes. No need to read from cover to cover, just open it up and be enlightened and entertained. It's no small thing these days to find a book beautiful presented, with a good binding and attractive pages. Something would be lost if it were an "e book". A nice gift for a history buff.

Fascinating journey - following classic influences through to today
By Hearth
This is a fascinating book. I love how the authors discuss not only the classical concepts, authors, literature, artifacts, etc. but also discuss how they have been incorporated into various cultures over time. They include references to great scholars who interpreted the classical tradition for their own times. The Oxford Dictionary of Classics is a fantastic resource if you want only the information about the classics themselves. If you want to know more about how the classics were used, transformed and reviewed over time, this is your book.

If you are the kind of person who likes to read random articles in the encyclopedia or random pages in the dictionary, this is for you. We pick up the book and read a few articles at random, just for the fun of it. Always enlightening.

If you are researching classical influences in a given period of history, let's say, the influences of the classical period on aesthetics over time, this is for you.

The cover art is perfect, showing many aspects of the classical tradition - all in one painting. Well done.

Missing 411- A Sobering Coincidence, by David Paulides

Missing 411- A Sobering Coincidence is the fifth book in the acclaimed series about people who have mysteriously disappeared. The books have been vetted by some of the top journalists in the world with statements such as; “David Paulides has shined a light onto one of the greatest and most disturbing mysteries of our time.” Another comment; “The paper trail uncovered by Paulides through sheer doggedness is impressive, the evidence indisputable.” Survivorman Les Stroud was interviewed about the series and stated, “Paulides presents pure facts. Facts that can’t be disputed.” The author continues with his profile points involving the disappearances and applies them to a series of incidents involving young men and women, mostly college age. Many of the victims vanished within the confines of their college or university town. These individuals were brilliant scholars, athletes and stellar people in their community. They disappear under unusual circumstances and are often found in areas that were previously searched. Medical examiners in these cases often cannot determine the cause of death. Many times the victim was recovered in water, yet autopsies show the body was not in the water the entire time the victim was missing. The majority of the families in these cases believe their loved ones were abducted and held, then later dumped in the water. These allegations are generally ignored by authorities until pressured by facts presented through secondary autopsies that families requested and paid for. This is a chilling and shocking series of stories that will cause many parents and young people to rethink their nighttime activities. About the Author
(www.canammissing.com-Missing person website) Dave Paulides received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of San Francisco, and, has a professional background that includes twenty years in law enforcement and senior executive positions in the technology sector. On March 1, 2012 David released "Missing 411-Western U.S.", the story of people who have disappeared in the wilds of North America. Many of the parents and relatives of the missing make claims that the victim was kidnapped/abducted, in very remote areas, this is well documented. This 3+ year 7000 hour investigation into unexplained disappearances in isolated locations is a book that anyone who walks in the woods should read. The real question that this book elicits is.... What is happening to these people? In late March 2012 David's second book in the Missing 411 series was released, "Missing 411-Eastern U.S." The eastern version is a continuation of stories which occurred in the eastern half of the United States with special sections on unusual outdoor activities which seem to be related to disappearances and a master list of all people who have vanished. In June 2012 Mr. Paulides was an invited speaker at the 2012 National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) annual conference in South Lake Tahoe. The presentation was on the findings of the Can Am Project that were detailed in "Missing 411." The packed room at the Harvey's Convention Center heard Mr. Paulides give a detailed overview of the twenty eight clusters of missing people and the associated elements found within the clusters. Since the release of the "Missing 411" series, Mr. Paulides has been a guest on countless radio shows, morning television, conferences and prime time news casts. The 411 series has been vetted by some of the best Search and Rescue professionals, investigative journalists, radio and television hosts and print journalists from north America. My own look at the area where the two students died at the quarry near the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater
By D Fink
I live 10 miles from where two of the university students, whose tragic deaths are included in this book, were found deceased within fourteen months and 40 feet of each other at the bottom of a limestone quarry in the city of Whitewater, Wisconsin. They both attended the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater and from all accounts they were both promising young students and happy in life. These two young men were both found dead, one in 2011 and the other in 2012, after supposedly having jumped or fell over the quarry wall at the northeast corner, 70 feet to the bottom. The young men couldn't have been looking to go for a swim. The water is always pumped out of the quarry according to the owners.

I have read all of David Paulides' Missing 411 books and been very disturbed about people's loved ones going missing mysteriously under a certain set of circumstances. You will have to read his books to understand the full scope of these deaths. Living in Wisconsin, I also know well of the 8 students who "supposedly" drowned near the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse in the past few years. Now, after having read Mr. Paulides' newest book, "Missing 411 A Sobering Coincidence", my friend and I felt that we must have a look around the local quarry where the two UW-Whitewater students died.

Also very compelling to us was that the Whitewater quarry owner, in an interview after the students' deaths, said that in order for the young men to have gotten through the heavy, dense brush surrounding the northside of the quarry and over the wall where they supposedly fell in, they would have had to have gotten on their hands and knees and backed through the brush in order to get through and not have had their faces torn off. The quarry owner also said that the quarry was very isolated and a mile to a mile and a half out of town. He couldn't understand how or why they would choose to do this. He has since erected a barbed wire fence around the quarry and an earthen berm. I have no doubt that he feels guilt in connection with these deaths.

Not long ago on a Sunday afternoon when no one would be around the quarry, my friend and I visited the Hawks Nest Bar in the city of Whitewater where UW-Whitewater student, Benjamin Fuder, was last seen. We drove around the town of Whitewater and then out to the quarry. We saw for ourselves that the road leading to the quarry (Franklin Street) from the city was very dark with no street lights, lined with trees and woods, marshes and cornfields and isolated with no homes nearby. The quarry was 1 mile to 1.5 miles from where the young men were last seen. Both young men were on their way home and only lived a couple of blocks from where they were last seen. Mark Wegner was at a house party a couple of blocks from his home and Benjamin Fuder was at the Hawks Nest a couple of blocks from his home also. Why would both young men head home but then decide to walk instead out of town 1 to 1.5 miles down this dark, deserted road to the quarry? Their families insist they were happy and well adjusted. The sheriff's department calls their deaths an accident. But Benjamin Fuder's family felt that he was targeted by someone somehow.

My friend and I found that just before the students reached the quarry, they had to pass over a small creek with extremely heavy trees and growth on the east side and swamp, marsh, woods and then cornfields on the west side. Finding the service road they supposedly walked to get back to the north side of the quarry from the northwest side was difficult even in the daylight. We finally spotted some gravel overgrown with grass and what looked like tire tracks from the electric company service trucks. We discovered that there was no way for these young men to have entered the quarry from the opposite side which was the northeast side because from that direction it would be a long and nearly impossible trek through heavy, dense brush, trees, vines, bushes and tall tangled grasses.

Upon reaching the north side of the quarry on the service road, we were very surprised to find extremely heavy brush, trees, overgrowth, vines and long grasses and just no way to enter the quarry unless, like the owner noted, they got on their hands and knees and backed through the tangled overgrowth so as not to get their faces ripped off.

Going further east along the north side of the quarry to the northeast corner where both students were found was completely impossible unless you had a machete to hack your way through. The density of the brush was like a 4 foot wall preventing any further travel along the north side. I took at least 30 pictures for proof because I was so disturbed at what the Walworth County Sheriff's Department wants to have you believe about these cases, that they were accidental.

Of note also, is that Benjamin Fuder's brother said in an interview, that he is searching for answers about what happened to Ben: "He wouldn't have stumbled a mile past his house, he wouldn't, you know, he wouldn't have gone down a gravel maintenance road, through some shrubs and over the edge of a cliff," said Shane Fuder, Ben's brother. "Sounds like way too much work for a drunk kid that just wants to go home."

Keep in mind also as you read this book, that in a town hall meeting regarding the deaths of 8 students in the waters around the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse, when the police department continued to ask the families and the public to believe that these 8 drownings were a result of young people drinking and falling or jumping to their deaths that the police were booed out of the building by the crowd in attendance. So many people in LaCrosse know something bad besides accidents is happening and they want answers. Don't buy into the drowning stories because as David points out, some of the young people in this book were missing for many days, and the waters and surrounding areas searched many times with no results and then the bodies suddenly appear. According to coroner's reports, some of these students were missing far longer than they were in the water. Where were they and what is going on? Everyone needs to be aware of these clusters of missing college age people around the Great Lakes area. Decide then where you want to send your loved ones to school. These cases need to be reopened with a fresh look and just maybe, with these books and the Missing 411 documentary coming out next year, more eyes will open to the facts. Also, ask yourself why the police departments in these cases want to have you believe that these are just drunk students stupidly falling or jumping to their deaths. Would it be because if they have murder cases on their hands and we become aware of this, how many of us would allow our loved ones to attend school in their town?

An important piece of work!
By Amazon Customer
In this volume of Missing 411, David takes things in a very different direction. He is looking into the patterns of disappearances, mainly on or around college campuses, which end with the victims found dead in the nearby water. These people are often young, late teens and early 20's, often disappear very suddenly, and are found in places that do not make sense, which have usually been searched before, and often without any clear cut cause of death. Almost all of these cases end with the victim being found in the water. These cases are systematically dismissed by law enforcement, and that may be because they have no good answers for the facts of them. The more you read through these, the more you see the pattern. The official response is that you have college students getting drunk and falling into the river / pond / lake, what have you, and there are some cases where perhaps that did happen. Most of these, though, you find the person could not have been in the water as long as they were missing, so they were somewhere else for days, sometimes weeks, and then ended up in the water. Victims will disappear from bars, or just outside bars, and are never see again. There are variations. Searches reveal nothing. Then, someone finds the body, in a location that was thoroughly searched, weeks or months later. As you read through these cases, you can plainly see the facts don't add up. He also deals with some other strange water related deaths, that are slightly different in pattern at first glance, but have some of the same elements present. It's disturbing. David also ties it into the previous Missing 411 work. Again, the overall archetype is there, even if the details look different at first. Something is happening to these people. Something that we do not have all the pieces to. As David collects these cases, we can see bits here and there, the reactions on the phone just before someone disappears, the comments of coroners, the lack of memory from the occasional survivor, the way people get places they shouldn't be able to, to name a few. I don't know what is happening to these people, and honestly it's a little mind boggling. Now, however, we know it's not just in National Parks. Whatever it is, it has never been caught. Whatever it is, it is still out there.

My review of David Paulides new Missing 411 book, A Sobering Conincidence
By Richard A. Hucklebridge
This new fifth addition of David Paulides Missing 411 book’s , A Sobering Coincidence, is going to be a must read for all of us, especially for those of us who send our kids off to college. In this new edition there is a whole new set of circumstances with different a scenario; as to how and why these young people are going missing. Again, David does not give out who or tell us why these young people have gone missing, but after reading a few of these different case’s it will possibly scream out to you; as it did for me, as to what is going on! Where it will form a picture in your mind as to what is possible taking place. The reason may give you a little trouble, but you will come to a pretty good conclusion as too possibly who the perpetrators are and to why these young people are going missing; which is continuing on as we speak.
These Missing 411 books gives the public a heads up as to what is taking place in our world; where I am not too sure that we are capable of figuring out how to put a stop to any of this, but possible we might slow these missing situations down if we are for warned. Again, those folks who are in charge know this is happening, but they seem not to put the pieces together well enough to make any conclusions and or any positive statements regarding how we might contend with a situation that is presented to us with this new Missing 411 book.
David’s Introduction is very informative and his Conclusions at the end are very helpful in understanding these missing situations!
This book is a little different, regarding these folks who go missing, but still a must read!!! It’s how they are found and the locations that can make this a mystery!
Richard Hucklebridge

Not what it appears to be
By David K. Miller
I'm giving these duets a 2-star rating because my complaint isn't so much about the arranger's work as the misleading difficulty level stated in the description and on the front cover of the book: Intermediate to Late Intermediate Piano.

I have one other book of Sallee's arrangements from the Popular Performer series labeled "Early Advanced" and although that difficulty rating also seems inflated, the arrangements contain fairly interesting flourishes and harmonizations.

I tried to find sample pages and reviews of the "Duet Showstoppers" on several sites in addition to Amazon but failed. I reasoned that Late Intermediate arrangements wouldn't be that much easier than Early Advanced. I was wrong. These are obviously intended for student recitals of second-year, possibly early third-year, students. The novelty repertoire would please parents or grandparents. A few passages would be more challenging for a young pianist simply because the original melody lines have some tricky fingerings (for example, Nola and Dizzy Fingers). But even on those the primo player splits the melody between hands.

The secondo parts are primarily single-note left hand and two- or three- note right hand comping in quarter notes. As stated above, the primo player simply recites the melody with occasional two-note harmonies. Only one piece, The Entertainer, has the primo player doubling the melody in sixths. The notation font is 'big note' style throughout.

So, why am I going on about this? There are better ways to identify difficulty level for unseen music than the overly broad term "intermediate" (which means 3 or 4 years of study to many piano teachers). There are various numbered grading systems that with minimal definition (comparable classical repertoire or technical details) would give the buyer a better idea of the intended audience. (Searching on "grading systems" at the pianoworld.com site will give you more information than you probably want.)

This was a waste of money for me because the purchase price was low enough that return postage will cost half as much as the book. So, it will go to a local piano teacher who wants "7 Crowd-Pleasing Arrangements" for elementary school pianists.

Buy this RIGHT NOW!
By Payton Stone
This is Gretchen’s debut novel and boy did she knock it right out of the park! I devoured this book in like 40 minutes and highlighted some of my favorite poems, which I will share with you in this review. When I finished the book I was left completely speechless because the book was just that beautiful. I actually teared up a little bit.

To be completely honest, I won’t be doing much of a review just because I honestly feel like how do you put a ‘rating’ on something that is so raw and personal to the author. How do you ‘review’ someone’s life experiences when they are laid out in a format such as this.

Personally, poetry speaks to me on a different level than prose. I’m not sure why. I just feel like poetry is meant to reach into the depths of a person and pull out their deepest emotions. It does this for both the author and the reader.

I have picked a few passages from the book that did reach down inside me and I hope you enjoy them just as much as I did.

These two passages are what completely won me over and made me realize that this book was going to speak to my experiences as well.

“i
learned
my
lesson
when
i
felt
single
on
the
weekends
i was his girl monday thru friday
– balance
i blame this one on me”

“but
i
was
losing
myself
while still trying to be with you.”

Here’s some great advice you can find in this book:

“it’s usually the who and what
behind the love that cause
the
pain.
dont blame love;
blame the who or the what
for lying to you
for making you believe
that love is pain
love hurts
– you should experience love with the right person, no the wrong one”

“the ones who break your heart,
cant repair it either.”

“yank that control back like
the queen you are and make
sure they see that crown
while you take back what’s yours,

your life
your body
your soul”

This was such an amazing read and I will be recommending it to anyone who will listen!

a raw and empowering read for the brokenhearted
By Deborah Marie
i have been reading a lot of beautiful poetry collections as of late, and this collection is no exception. the poems in this collection are both heartbreaking and empowering, and it is clear that the author opened herself up fully, and allowed her words and feelings to flow through the cracks in her heart and onto the pages of this book. there was a particularly painful period of my life where i could have used a book like this, and i highly encourage anybody who has been through a toxic relationship, or is going through some form of heartbreak, to pick up this collection and lose themselves in Gretchen's words. absolutely beautiful debut!

6 essays by Schopenhauer
By Mei
This book is in the public domain, so you can download it legally for free from several sites on the web; even when Amazon does not offer it (temporary), you can find it for your Kindle.

Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher who lived from 1788-1860; he was influenced among others by Plato and Immanuel Kant, and in his turn influenced Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig wittgenstein, Thomas Mann and others. Schopenhauers work is known for its pessimistic views and beautifully written essays. If you like reading philosophy -or would like to try it- then I can recommend reading some of Schopenhauers essays.

This volume contains some essays that were first published in Schopenhauers 'Parerga und Paralopomena' (1851). The printed version of this volume has 101 pages. The contents of this volume:

HUMAN NATURE
GOVERNMENT
FREE-WILL AND FATALISM
CHARACTER
MORAL INSTINCT
ETHICAL REFLECTIONS

As a sample I copy the second paragraph of the second essay ('Government') below:

[...]
The man who starts from the preconceived opinion that the conception
of Right must be a positive one, and then attempts to define it, will
fail; for he is trying to grasp a shadow, to pursue a spectre, to
search for what does not exist. The conception of Right is a negative
one, like the conception of Freedom; its content is mere negation.
It is the conception of Wrong which is positive; Wrong has the same
significance as _injury_--_laesio_--in the widest sense of the term.
An injury may be done either to a man's person or to his property or
to his honour; and accordingly a man's rights are easy to define:
every one has a right to do anything that injures no one else.

Accessible Thinking
By David Land
To take a book on philosophy and pass judgement on it is especially difficult. I think this topic more than others will in a large way play to your beliefs and prejudices - or it wont. With that as one means of measurement I found myself highlighting numerous passages I agreed with. I also found plenty of the book to be very thought provoking. This I would suggest means that the authour has successfully moved the reader (this one at least) outside of their conventional thinking zone - which is surely the actual point - i.e. to learn something.

I found the writing style to be far less self indulgent than you may see on this broad topic elsewhere. This means you aren't constantly unwinding vast amounts of prose before you can feel you have started to understand the argument being made. This isn't to say that books with a more flamboyant style can't be as good as this - it's just that this one is easily absorbed without losing the impact.

I suspect also that most readers will find the views expressed here to be contemporary. It's not old (in the grander scheme of things) but you will find that you need to make little allowance for the changes in the world since it was published. Perhaps in a similar way to Machiavelli, judgements on human nature don't change greatly over the centuries.
