A story of strength and companionship in a racially conflicted world.

Black Cat on a White Porch provides readers the opportunity to understand racial tension and race relations during the 1960's, World War II era. Readers begin to feel a connection to the women of the story, as they deal with the daily struggles of life and of the time period of the story. The women have lived very different experiences in their lives, but one thing that connects them all to one another is their willingness and desire to continue living in a world where they are told they do not fit in. As well as in a world where the people they love are currently away at war, but the strength each of the main characters possess will hold strong until the end of time. Overall I was completely engaged in the characters stories in novel, and did not want to put it down! Very well-written book.

An Unexpected Thrill

This novel was an unexpected thrill. I went through different stages of emotion and inquisition. I found myself desperate to read to the end, because I needed to know what happened to each character. The twists and the way characters were introduced kept me interested the whole way through. It took me out of my normal, pleasure reading state of mind, and once I started, I had to finish the book. I read it in one day, because the emotions and experiences were so real. It rang true as a fictional account of the world in 1966, and it rings true of the world today. Reading Black Cat on a White Porch was a surreal experience. A very well-written book.

This book is excellent for experienced Swing-plus-JavaFX developers who use Netbeans IDE, especially its platform framework. This book is not for developers who have little of knowledge on JavaFX but want to learn JavaFX. For them, it simply wastes money. This book pointed out the most important patterns or techniques used in implementation of Netbeans-Platform-based applications. It really helped me about how to integrate JavaFX techs and Swing-based NB-Platform so as to have merits of both worlds.

This book is definitively helpful for experienced architects or developers who works on Netbeans-platform-based Java application powered by JavaFX techs.

The only one thing I "complained" is this book wasted some space on instructions how to, step-by-step, create a java project, class, insert methods, etc. Since the audience is not beginners but experienced, why did authors bother explaining such tedious basic details on NB-IDE.

My comments are based on my reading experiences in the past 2 days: I did read my interested points, roughly 25% of this book, in very details and I just quickly scan the others.

That's why I gave 4 stars but not five stars

Not a great book for learning JavaFX

This book is for those who has been working with Java GUI with Swing and would like to enhance with JavaFx. If you are new and want to work on Java GUI, don't get this book since you can have your work done with JavaFx without Swing. Why bother learning Swing now?

A superb sequel & a sumptuous read!

CLASSIFICATION: The Heartstriker series is an action-packed urban fantasy series with a strong dose of comedy, post-apocalyptic SF themes and dragons.

ANALYSIS: Ever since I got my hands on The Spirit Thief, the debut book by Rachel Aaron, I’ve been enchanted by the worlds she imagines and the characters that inhabit them. When she announced this new series, I was very much looking forward to it with a lot of curiosity. After reading Nice Dragons Finish Last, I was thrilled to bits with the new series.

One Good Dragon Deserves Another or OGDDA as the abbreviation goes is the brilliant follow up to Nice Dragons Finish Last (NDFL). It's a cracker of a sequel that basically starts within a month of the climax of NDFL and basically widens up the world, and story in every way possible. I’ll be discussing some plot points of the story which will be spoiler-ish so please be forewarned of it.

The plot opens up with Julius and Marci happily forming a partnership and being able to do their job as curse-removal specialists. The problem arises when Bethesda returns to the DFZ and grabs Julius to go with her to a special meeting. Which turns out to be the upcoming nuptials (of sorts) of Ivan Heartstriker and Svena White Witch of the Three sisters. While this happy event is a very perfunctory one, it turns out Bob being a seer has invited a special dragon to this ceremony. That dragon being Amelia, who is the only surviving member of the A clutch and a mighty dragon in herself. While Julius is unaware of who she is, he does get to know her and is bemused by her interest in him.

Things however take a horrible turn when Estella, the oldest daughter of the Three sisters returns and hatches a plan to defeat Bob at his seer game. It will be up to Julius, Marci, Bob and the rest to help the Hearstriker clan survive the coming onslaught while also trying to survive Algonquin’s hunter who has a special interest in killing dragons.

This book in a word was magnificent and here's why:
a) It gives us the whole backstory about the dragons and why there seems to be so much infighting among dragon clans
b) Why Algonquin the lady of the lakes and other spirits hate the dragons so much
c) How does mankind fit into the magic equation

All of the above and much more is laid bare for the reader and the author truly gives us two protagonists to root for. This time Julius shares the spotlight with Marci who is frankly fantastic as a protagonist. The previous book focused on Julius and while it was a fun read. With OGDDA, Marci takes center stage and we get a stronger, multi-faceted story. The book’s cover kind of highlights this new shift and Marci also learns so much more from her association with Ghost. How and when this happens, is possibly the most surprising twist and only the second most shocking part of the story.

The story also focuses on Bob, Justin, Chelsie, Ghost and couple of other major characters. The character cast is suitably widened and I loved this aspect of the story-line. Bob, I believe is a character that is such a hit and in this volume, we get to know more about him and his powers. This just made me love Bob more even when he’s at his most infuriating. There’s also a strong light shined on Chelsie who has so far remained in the shadows and we kind of get an inkling why that is. Lastly the plot reveals the magical history of the world as well as the backstory of the Dragons. This revelation makes so much sense from a world-building point of view and has me intrigued for further exploration.

The story takes a suitable dark turn within a few pages of its start and Rachel Aaron does keep the tension evenly strung throughout the story. This book very much reads like a Jeffrey Deaver thriller wherein the entire plot unfolds over two to three days and the twists come left, right & center. This book possibly is the most twisted story-line that Rachel has written so far (among the 10 fiction books she has written so far). I couldn’t quite keep with all the happenings as there’s a seer battle going on as one of them reiterates “you can never be too sure with a seer”. The story unfolds at a wicked pace and the readers will be racing along to find what truly is happening.

Lastly while the book ends on a very surprising note, it’s the epilogue that’s the real stunner and I mean it. After all the twists and revelations that the main plot has in it, the last few paragraphs of the epilogue reveal so much more and further deepen the world and magic system so to speak. After finishing the book, I can only imagine the amount of email that Rachel will be getting about the epilogue.

As for any drawbacks, this story is definitely not a standalone; one cannot just jump into it. It needs to be read after Nice Dragons Finish Last, so that’s the only point I can think which detracts from this sumptuous thriller. On all other fronts, it aces its characterization, plot twists, plot pace, etc.

CONCLUSION: One Good Dragon Deserves Another is a first rate sequel that completely outshines its predecessor in every department. It reads like a thriller, is a urban fantasy, Sci-fi mashup in its plot and is a fantastic read overall. When it comes to books from author that we love, I don’t think we can ask more than that. Be sure to read One Good Dragon Deserves Another as it absolutely cements Rachel Aaron's reputation as a gifted storyteller.

A sequel that surpasses the first book!

Rachel Aaron’s ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER is witty, fresh, and fun. A sequel that expands on world building, characters, and the series plot makes this one a winner.

Our story opens two months after the events of the first book and Julius Heartstriker and his human mage friend Marci are hiding out in the DFZ. Who are they hiding from? Depends who you ask, but anyone bearing the name of Julius’ dragon clan –Heartstriker – is someone to avoid so far as he’s concerned. But family is tough to dodge even at the best of times, so when you’ve got scores of draconic brothers and sisters there’s no hiding out for long. Sooner than Julius would like his family are back in the picture, dragging the “Nice Dragon” into dragon clan politics – and maybe even war.

If there’s one thing clan Heartstriker is good at it’s getting into trouble and stepping on toes…and chopping off heads. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when Estella, dragon Seer and the de facto head of the Three Sisters clan, starts targeting the Heartstrikers directly. While our protagonists Julius and Marci are worried, the matriarch of the clan Bethesda doesn’t bat a single heavily mascaraed eyelash. After all, what does a powerful clan of almost a hundred dragons have to fear from Estella? But all bets are off when a Seer gets involved…

Fan favourites Bob and Chelsie are back and better than ever in ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER, taking a more active role in Julius’ life. I adored both characters in the first book, but getting a peek at their individual motivations and agendas was fascinating! I love the fact that Heartstriker’s enforcer is a woman, since that role is typically reserved for male characters; Chelsie can definitely kick some serious dragon ass, which we get to see in multiple wonderfully written battle scenes. You go girl!

The other badass lady in ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER is of course Marci, the most lovable character ever. It’s not easy being a human in a dragon’s world, especially one with a sassy attitude. Her magical brilliance, cunning, and audacity are actually all draconic characteristics, now that I think about it. She’d make a great dragon. But aside from helping out her BFF/potential BF Julius, Marci has her own problems to deal with. For one thing, her spirit cat Ghost has been acting very strange indeed…and may not actually be a spirit cat after all. I’ll not spoil the surprise but holy crap were Marci and Ghost’s scenes together awesome!

Marci’s magical abilities and her relationship with the spirit cat led to my favourite relationship in this book: the tentative alliance between Marci and Amelia Hearstriker. That’s right, we finally get to meet a member of the illustrious ‘A’ clutch, Bethesda’s first group of children. And Amelia does not disappoint! The hard-drinking, magic-wielding dragoness is a perfect counterpoint to her more controlled siblings. And I loved seeing her geek out about magic with Marci!

As if the fabulous characters weren’t enough, the plot of ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER was also compelling and unpredictable. The major plot arc wraps up with enough detail to satisfy, and then some major game changers are introduced in the epilogue. No cliffhanger, just intriguing stuff! I have burning questions that need to be answered in the third book. These questions include:

1. How will clan Heartstriker respond to a certain spirit throwing down the gauntlet?
2. Will Julius ever get up the nerve to ask Marci on a date? Preferably one that doesn’t involve tank badgers?
3. And finally, what the heck happened with Chelsie in China?!

Suffice it to say that after ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER, I’m eagerly anticipating the third book. There’s something for everyone in this wholly unique series: humour, heart, and seriously great characters. If you’re not already reading the Heartstrikers series, do yourself a favour and pick it up!

Rachel Aaron delivers again in the continuation of her Heartstrikers series.

One Good Dragon Deserves Another brings us back to the intriguing world of the Heartstriker clan, but as we tantalizingly learn more, their very futures are snatched away. Rachel Aaron carries off this complexity of plot where seers are manipulating fate, and the heroes are still learning the rules of this world, right alongside our readers. She masterfully lays in all the hints, but the relevant do not become apparent until the critical moment. Her balance of discovery and action is astounding, there is never a quiet moment, yet readers do get those opportunities to learn more and understand this world of post magic's return.

Julius continues to be a compelling hero, harassing not his own powers, but his ability to bring people together, which seems such a trial in our own mundane world. Marci is a pure joy, displaying a mixture of ruthless to go all out for what she desperately believes in, but still the naivety of a researcher, that strives more than anything else to know. Getting to know more of Julius's siblings and some key spirits provide another fascinating aspect to a story that's as much about ruling other as it is about ruling one's self.

Gray, confusing writing. Total lack of illustrations, images, tables to support learning this information. Poor written, poorly organized. Lack of bolded keywords, no eluding to important topics. Awful. I hope they quit printing it.

Originally, I saw friends reading this and they loved it. I immediately put my request in for it at the library. The ebooks always take time, so by the time I was notified that a copy was available I had forgotten about this book. This turned out to be a great YA read. It had me sucked in right from the start.

"I've read many more books than you. It doesn't matter how many you've read. I've read more. Believe me. I've had the time.

Seventeen year old Madeline lives with her mother and hangs out with her nurse/friend Carla throughout the day. See she can't leave her home because she's been diagnosed to have a rare disease that leaves her basically allergic to the world. It's called SCID. Each time her mother or nurse come and go into the house they have to go through a decontamination process to make sure they don't bring anything into the sterile environment that Madeline needs to live.

Never leaving your house makes for a lot of free time of which Madeline reads, watches movies or plays games with her mother. One of the things that I loved was how she writes her name in her books and rewards to who ever will return it if it's ever lost. She was so creative and funny.

This was her normal life. She was content with it. Until one day, when she hears the familiar sound of a moving truck at the house next door. She watches from her window while the family moves in. That's when she sees him, Olly and he sees her. Later, Olly and his sister Kara bring over a bundt cake their mother made wanting to meet Madeline. Unfortunately, her mother has to refuse the food and can't let them in because of Madeline's disease. The things Olly did with that bundt cake latter had me cracking up.

Soon though, Olly and Madeline begin chatting through emails or IMs. It takes Madeline some time, but eventually she opens up about her disease and why she can't go outside. Olly was awesome about it. He didn't stop talking to her or run away and their friendship grew stronger.

With Carla's help they do sneak some visits and let Olly come over to meet Madeline. The rules are to never touch, just talk. And they follow those rules...in the beginning. But later they test their boundaries by holding hands and then a kiss. Soon Madeline is willing to risk it all for him.

"I was happy before I met him. But I'm alive now, and those are not the same thing."

Gah! I loved this book! More than I thought I would. I even dreamed about it. Maybe it's because I had a connection with the Hawaii part. I had been to the exact places that were discussed in this book. The attached picture is one I took of Black Rock. Whatever the case may be, this book made me stop and realize that life is short and precious. We take so many things in life for granted and it's nice to have a reminder every now and then.

"Everything's a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It's up to you."

This was my first read by Nicola Yoon. I loved her husband's drawings that were added. The writing was perfect, captivating and really made me feel. I also liked the plot twist added towards the end. I wasn't expecting it. I was actually expecting a different ending, but the twist, while while sad made for a better ending to me. If you like YA then I would definitely recommend this one.

I have read many books in my 23 years of life. And I am those type of people who fall head over heels in love with certain books. This is one of them. The writing is beautiful, you fall in love with the characters in this book and honestly, I just could not put this book down. Throughout my day I could not wait until I reunited with this story,

You have to read this book, it will definitely change the way you see and appreciate things.

Predictable but well written story

When I started reading this book, I was starving for interracial romance which intensified my expectations. It is a good and easy read, it took me 2 days to finish the whole thing. Lovable characters, Maddy is pretty smart and so is Olly- although I prefer Oliver (by the way I don't remember his last name and now I doubt he ever had one).
After I got over the whole romance thing and my analytical brain took over, the story line laid flat as a typical boy next door story- a well written one. No spoilers but I suspected the ending somewhere before chapter 'birthday wish'. And if I wasn't too sure, the birthday chapter clarified it for me.
Once I was completely over the romance, the plot holes revealed themselves- more like black holes swallowing everything in its path.
Overall, it is a nice and quick read. Is it worth the money? Depends on your taste and size of your wallet. Will I read it again? Nope. Will I watch the movie? After I read the book, I feel obligated. But if the reviews are bad enough, I might wait until it lands on Netflix.

Not much of contents.

I bought the printed book (and eBook) based on the sample chapter and customer review.
I am regretting my purchase. It only has 70 pages of talend big data stuffs. The rest of pages (20 - 30 pages) talks about Cloudera virtual machines thing. I was hoping the book explains the each big data components, but it only shows you how to connect to hadoop and some examples. The book doesn't cover any deeper. This is very beginner book.
To me, this book is very big disappointment, and regret to spend $37 for getting print book. Lessons learned, never buy the print book, but buy eBook first to see if they are any good. :)

Getting things done with Talend and Hadoop

I’ve just finished reading Talend for Big Data, courtesy of Packt Publishing.
I’ve been using Talend for ETL and automation tasks for some years and I wanted to start using it to feed data into a small hadoop cluster we have, so I think I can be able to put myself on this book readers shoes easily.

I’ve enjoyed the book follows a real use case of sentiment analisys using twitter data: I was getting tired of examples word counting / term extraction examples found in other Hadoop texts.

The structure is very straightforward and It resembles closely a real world Big Data integration job:

-The basics: what’s Talend, what’s hadoop, and how to get started (terminology and setup)
-How to get data into a hadoop cluster (there’s a component for that: tHDFDOutput)
-Working with tables (hive) in Talend using Hive.
-Working with data using Pig.
-Loading results back to an SQLdatabase using Apache Sqoop
-And finally, how to industrialize this process.

In the real world you’ll surely choose between Hive and Pig to make your project simpler. Having a chapter for hive and another for pig lets you see and compare both technologies and helps you choose the one you feel more comfortable working with.

I’ve also found very interesting using Apache Sqoop to getting the data out of Hadoop back to the SQL World.

I didn’t know about Sqoop before reading the book and I was tempted to extract the data from Hadoop using a Talend job as a bridge. Dont’ do IT!. Using Sqoop is much better because it can paralelize the load job. It remembers me how to make backups using a disk cabin vs using a server agent (just tell the cabin to do the backup by its own vs copying all the data to a point and move it around).

Surprises:

:: The good ::

* Contexts! I’ve ever thought the best part of Talend are contexts and I find great to see all the examples in the book using contexts since the beginning.
* In chapter 4 we learn how to use UDF (user-defined-functions) with Hive inside Talend. In the book the problem it solves is Hive does not support regular expressions; but It gives us a clue that may allow us to do something with interesting with other kinds of data, like images or audio files.
* The way Talend works with Pig is easier that I expected. Why? because you dont’ need to know anything about Pig latin code to get results. I expected something more complicated. In fact, I thing I’m going to use tPig* components more frequently than the Hive ones.
: The chapter about using Sqoop with Talend. For me, this chapter just justifies buying the book because it saves you a lot of time.

:: The bad ::

* I discovered in the book that Talend doesnt include all the JARs needed to work with Hadoop. This is not a technical problem per se; but a legal one: Talend cannot distribute the hadoop files under their own license. Fortunately the guys from Talend have made available a one-click-fix.
* At first glance I found the book short. Maybe I’m used to technical books with a lot of literature and this book has a very practical how-to-make-things-happen approach. I hope to see a second edition soon with dedicated to Google Big Query (which, by the way, is supported by Talend in the latest release with its own set of components).

Conclusion: concise, hands-on book about data integration with Talend and Hadoop. Highly recommendable even if you just want to extract data from an existing hadoop cluster.

Nicely covers what I feared to be complexities of dealing with Hadoop as Hive and Pig using Talend - turned to be not true

Talend for Big Data means exactly it! One of the shortest technical books I read, but sure to the point.

This book does not spend your time unwisely, if you happened to suddenly find yourself on a project involving Hadoop (or its ecosystem components) and you know at least some Talend (if not, I recommend a supplementary book that I also reviewed, Talend Open Studio Cookbook by Packt, too) then this is your book. Print it (if you got an eBook) and place a copy by your desk.

The book nicely covers what I feared complexities of dealing with Hadoop as Hive and Pig (a MR generator, not an animal), which actually turned out to be not true, thanks Talend and its 500+ components that cover 90% of what you need out of Big Data is already there for you to use. To my disbelief Talend actually is a very mature and (in paid variant) fully enterprise ready ETL solution.

The book has 7 chapters, each dedicated to a specific goal that accomplishes an exercise with a particular technology piece.
My favorite is #7: Big Data Architecture and Integration Patterns chapter. The last one, but this is the chapter where you get kind of awarded and start benefiting from the material you ingested.
Chapter 6: Aggregate Data with Pig is alot of fun and showed me a new way of interacting with Pig. It turned to be also a much easier way.
As a side note, I am in love with ETL, in general, I think it has the highest ROI out of all the enterprise tools, yet very much fun to work with and what is best - visually documenting!
Chapter 2: Building your First Big Data Job is like your first swim in deep waters - intimidating, but rewarding, full of uncertainty, but excitement and unforgettable.
All the less relevant topics as setting your training system up are shifted to the appendixes, but I recommend actually starting there if you are new to Cloudera's Hadoop (CDH) VM distribution and/or VMPlayer (served in role of your Virtual Machine).
It seemed to me that a reader does not need ANY prior knowledge of neither Talend nor Hadoop to accomplish the tasks in the book.

One suggestion I have to the author is instead of basing the examples on MySQL which seems to be out of favor by the user community MariaDB is the equivalent substitute that with the release of version 10 going to capture a lot of attention.
Another point is the Hadoop distribution preference, it seems that Hortonworks offers more bells and whistles, but it is a catchup game anyways.
