Best book on improvisation yet.

As a professor I'm constantly looking for good books and good information. I have many books on improvisation and all of them have something valuable. That said,
Ready, Aim, Improvise is the most well organized, complete, sensible and above all, musical book on improvisation that I've seen yet.

Here is a GREAT book !!

Hal Crook, in my view,has been one of the bright stars in college teaching. His book, Ready, Aim, Improvise, is a "must read", by any musician who is serious about becoming a better improviser and consumate musician. The clarity of his ideas, no non-sense approach to developing as a musician is simply one of the finest texts I have read in over 35 years of teaching. It has been out there since 1999 or so, and remains a cornerstone in the field of jazz studies. I know I am not the first to say Thanks Hal !!!!

An interesting take on life in Marching Band

This is a young adult book that centers around a character, Julia McCoy, who lived in California and was a drummer for a band with her friends.
One day, close to the end of her sophomore year of high school, her parents tell her they are moving across the country to Georgia. Julia isn't happy about the move, but what can she really do about it? After the move occurs, as school approaches, she goes to register for her classes. As she's registering, she's asked if there is anything she's interested in for classes or extra cirriculars.
Julia admits that she's a set drummer. She's convinced to sign up for band and goes to meet the director. As he learns that she's a set drummer, he has her audition. They offer her a late placement on the marching band. And she accepts.
You should know, Julia's never been in band. So you definitely get a perspective of what marching band is like, from a newbie's point of view. (I myself was never in band or even marching band....but I have several friends that were, so this was not a new point for me.)
Julia is the only girl playing tenors on the drumline. In her section, it seems that the leader of the section, Denny, likes her. During band camp, they become a couple when he bids for her in an auction and wins.
Once school officially starts up, Julia has to deal with band, her relationship with Denny, teaching drumset lessons, and I forgot to mention...she's also in a band, Beans and Cornbread. (Interesting name for a band, right?!) AND she has to deal with Denny's ex, Liberty Jensen, who is the most popular girl in school and of course, your typical cheerleader. But, she manages to work all those things out and the rivalry between Julia and Liberty is pretty interesting. Some of the ruses she comes up with to get back at Liberty totally rock!
Would I recommend this book? Yes! It's interesting and a fun read and I wish I'd read it sooner. It's been on my "to-read" list for a long time. The author has a few other books as well, and I think, with time, I will eventually read them.

I'm a drummer, I'm a dude, and I liked this book.

Yes, I had to endure the talk of "broad shoulders" and dreamy eyes, but this is a cute story about a girl in a competitive drumline in GA...being a drummer, band director, and drum corps alum, (not to mention a tenor player), I really loved all the accuracy about equipment, rehearsals, and other things associated with being in band for millions of kids throughout the nation. This isn't "Drumline" the movie. And that IS A GOOD THING! The director of that movie said he didn't do a traditional marching band story because it would be boring. Ms. Brandt has ABSOLUTELY proven him wrong. I'll be checking out the other books, stat!

I would have to say that this is one of those rare gems that brings you back to when you were in high school. As a former "band geek" who did band camp and all that is involved with band I would have to say I really appreciated this book. I would highly recommend this book for someone who is just trying to read something sweet and innocent.

This book is a must-have and a must-read for the person interested in the growth and progression of the Black community. There are some eye opening information relayed by Mr. Camara that may be too big of a pill to be swallowed by many. This is not a book for those that do not wish to experience any cognitive dissonance. If you fear having your beliefs challenged, then look elsewhere.

Russia's Finest

This novel is a little-known classic by the Soviet Union's masters of political science fiction. It examines the paradox of a future human society whose leaders feel (with some justification) that they are justified in meddling with less fully-developed civilizations, but who fanatically resists any external interference with their own. How the Soviet censors failed to recognize the element of self-reference in the narrative boggles my mind. The story is a personal drama, too, though, of the staunch "anti-progressor" Toivo Glumov, who begins by suspecting that a race of super beings is messing with human history, and ends, paradoxically, by...

...well, better not blow the ending. But please drop everything and read this book as soon as you can. It's as good as anything by Asimov, Stapleton, Sterling or Stephenson.

I agree with the previous reviewer. The Strugatskys are as good as Clarke and Asimov at their best. I was a little unsure about this book because the story is presented as a series of reports and memoirs (unlike Hard to be a God which I read first). However, the writing is top-notch throughout. It is a cerebral book. The ending is haunting. I continue to think about it.

Good read

The book provides a nice introduction to thermodynamics of electrolyte solutions. First 5 chapters should be readily accessible to undergraduate students. The prose is a bit unattractive and has many rough edges. A part of the book reads more like lecture notes than a carefully crafted exposition. A phrase such as "the chemical potential for the forward reaction," which is inappropriate since the chemical potential is a state variable, adds to the discomfort every now and then. Nevertheless, overall presentation is very clear and highly accessible. The book places more emphasis on practical calculations than on an in-depth look into the foundation of electrolyte thermodynamics. I would recommend the book for anyone who is looking for an introductory account of this important field.

My big disappointment was in typesetting. For example, notation for a vector in the main text differs from that in the equation. There are many large white spaces, especially around large figures. For a book of only 251 pages and yet costing as much as $83.00, I should expect a more professional quality typesetting from the publisher.

The book comes with a CD-ROM containing executables for things like activity coefficient calculation under mean-spherical-approximation. No source code is included. CD-ROM is in UDF format and may not be accessible for some CD-ROM/DVD drives. This was the case with my laptop with an external DVD drive even after installing the UDF reader which came with the book's CD-ROM. It worked flawlessly on my older laptop with an internal drive.
