Marrying a widowed queen is one thing, but courting the King's daughter and second in line to the throne is another. Seymor pursues the adolescent Elizabeth, as she finds herself dangerously attracted to him. From Publishers Weekly
Originally published in 1944, the first installment of Irwin's classic Elizabeth I Trilogy returns to enthrall new readers fascinated by the Elizabethian period. Brimming with vivid period details, Irwin portrays a young Elizabeth growing aware of her doomed love for the charismatic Tom Seymour, who married Elizabeth's widowed stepmother Catherine Parr (becoming uncle to Elizabeth's brother, King Edward IV). Tom, meanwhile, has grown dangerously tempted by Bess. Irwin depicts the iconic daughter of King Henry VIII and the beheaded Anne Boleyn ("Nan Bullen") with impeccable grace. After the death of her tyrannical father, leaving behind a legacy of beheaded wives and fear, Irwin suggests Elizabeth was all too aware of her inability to control her dark future, nor the fate of Lord High Admiral Tom.

Elizabeth, Captivating Princess....
By india_edghill@juno.com
One of the best-written and most evocative historical novels ever. I first read this when I was twelve, and it is still one of my favorite books. Due to this book, I conceived a passionate admiration for Elizabeth I which I've never lost, as well as an interest in English history that's provided years of fascinating research. (I also fell madly in love with the Lord High Admiral, but that's another story....)

Young Bess by Margaret Irwin
By Kathleen Kelly
Young Bess is the story of Elizabeth Tudor, the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. After the King had Anne executed,he declared Elizabeth illegitimate, thus losing her place in line to the throne, and removed her from his presence, to Hatfield House. After King Henry dies his last wife Catherine Parr has Elizabeth live with her and her new husband Tom Seymour. Thomas Seymour (known as Lord High Admiral) has an older brother Edward, who becomes The Lord Protector.
So begins the story of court intrique and royal whims that Elizabeth finds herself in. The Seymours gained power when their sister, Jane married King Henry VIII and produced a son and heir, Edward who is Elizabeths brother. Tom Seymour was jealous of his brothers power and pursues a relationship with Elizabeth, sometimes very intimate, with their bedroom antics. Tom would go into "the Lady Elizabeth's chamber before she was ready, and sometimes before she did rise; and if she were up he would bid her good morrow and ask how she did, and strike her upon the back or on the buttocks familiarly...." Kat Ashley, Elizabeths governess and friend tries to tell Elizabeth that these antics need to stop and after awhile Catherine Parr realizes that she needs to get Elizabeth away from Tom so to try to save Elizabeth's reputation she sends her away to the house of Anthony Denny in Hertfordshire. However, when Catherine dies in childbirth in August 1548, Thomas renewed his attentions to the Princess.
In his determination for power Thomas then devises a plan to kidnap the King. He breaks into the Kings apartments at Hampton Court, but was subsequently caught and arrested for treason in his plot to seize the throne from her half-brother, Edward VI. The Privy Council charged him with thirty-three counts of treason, one of which was, that they believed he had had a sexual relationship with Elizabeth and that she was with child, which we know now was not true.
I really enjoyed reading this book about Elizabeth and to learn a little more about her years under the age of 20. Ms. Irwin's writing was pleasurable and easy to understand. If I didn't know that this book had been previously published in 1944, I would feel like it was recently written. Thouroughly researched and beautifully told, Young Bess is a novel that anyone interested in the Tudor court after King Henry VIII, the early years of Elizabeth and even about King Edward VI,would enjoy. I highly recommend this book.

Unzipping the Digital World is a revealing new book by Keith Willetts that gives an eye-opening view into how to thrive and survive in the rapidly evolving digital economy that is permanently changing the world. Packed with practical advice on every page and written in a highly readable and non-technical style, this book is “must read” for anyone involved in creating and delivering communications, cloud or application services.

The book begins by Willetts outlining digital economy drivers including the massive rise in global connectivity, the rapid evolution of cloud services, and the enormous advances in smart devices - not just smartphones and tablets, but connected devices embedded in everything from cars to heart monitors. Ultimately, he claims, the digital economy is enabling major changes in our lives: in what we buy, how we do business, how we are governed, our education, healthcare, entertainment, interaction with others, and in our homes and offices.

As the digital world ushers in the most profound shift since the invention of printing press, opportunities and threats abound. Willetts describes the emerging structure of the market – specifically the communications sector – being a key enabler of the digital world yet facing serious threats to its core products and services. He offers detailed advice on where companies should position themselves, how they can exploit enterprise-based digital services and what core competencies they need to have to thrive.

The book continues, offering a practical ‘self-help’ guide to the transformation that existing players need to undertake in order to thrive. Learning to move more quickly, become highly innovative, deliver an outstanding customer experience, and manage sustainable ‘win-win’ partnerships are paramount to success, Willetts opines, with a critical need for in-depth software skills in the software dominated digital world. He describes how to deliver the essential highly integrated and automated operational systems and processes that can operate across the whole value chain. At the same time he advocates the need for visionary leadership and the evolution of a truly open digital economy that allows the open flow of digital goods and encourages regulators to refocus efforts away from their traditional role of constraint.

There is no doubt transformation to the digital world is happening fast. Willetts unzips the market with a ‘no holds barred’ picture of what today’s giants need to do to thrive and survive and presents a series of practical steps on how to exploit the massive opportunities the digital economy presents.

Praise for Unzipping the Digital World
“There are big opportunities in the digital world for those who get it right, but big challenges too. This book offers valuable insight into the new global economy and a practical guide on how to get to where you want to be.”
Liu Aili, EVP & Board Member, China Mobile Communications

“Two thumbs up! The future for operators will come from exploiting new sources of revenue in the digital world, which are so well set out and explored in this book.”
Paul Berriman, Chief Technology Officer, PCCW Hong Kong

“Many companies are struggling to reinvent themselves in the spider’s web of the digital world and this book provides some really valuable insights into how to manage this difficult transition.”
Michael Lawrey, Executive Director, Defence Engagement, Telstra Enterprise and Government

“The two words that stay in my mind after reading this are ‘leadership’ and ‘partnership’, which are at the heart of this practical guide to thriving in the digital world.”
Phil Dance, Former Chief Information Officer, BT

Brilliant, lucid and thrilling!
By L. Leboucher (@lleboucher)
Very clear analysis of the fast transformation of the communication industry into a new digital world where the rules of the game are being reinvented. Very insightful with plenty of colorful examples to articulate the thoughts. I enjoyed particularly the "Oklahoma Land Race" as a very inspiring metaphor.
Keith Willetts starts with a thorough understanding of the economic driving forces that shape the communication and digital industry today:
- where it appears that performance of the past is no indicator for the future
- where we can understand the drivers behind the rise of new "infomediaries" (like apple, amazon, facebook and twitter) taking a proeminent role in consumer customer relationship
- where the traditionnal voice and SMS market of CSP (communication service providers) is at stake and where new business models need to be invented
- where B2B and wholesale markets give new opportunities to build verticals and powerful value chains in cooperation with partners
But all this needs: clear choices, out of the box thinking, speed of execution, strong partnerships and open innovation.

A very greatful thanks to Keith Willetts for this very clear, lucid and positive journey into this new world of digital services that will transform very rapidly not only the communication and IT industry but will impact the whole economy. Let's get on our wagon in this new version of the Oklahoma Land Race! Many thanks Keith for this insightful and thrilling book.

An extremely well-argued and enjoyable polemic not merely about what communications service providers worldwide must do to survive, but more importantly about the waves of creativity that are driving countless new digital services that both benefit and intrigue people worldwide. From the perspective of a professional life spent in telecommunications, Willetts conveys enthusiasm about the future of the digital world in general, as well as Cassandra-like warnings that telcos must transform or be left in the dust. Neither cheerleader nor Jeremiah, he offers practical advice for industry leaders who want to enable their companies to go well beyond survival, indeed to thrive in the new digital services economy. Examples of both success and failure abound. Corporate leaders will ignore his words at their peril.

An Industry Leader Sharing the Wealth
By Amazon Customer
The fact that it was known Keith was writing a new book to look forward, as his first book, "The Lean Communications Proivder", did when it came out, was the source of much buzz and anticipation in the industry. It was well worth the wait!

What I hope for and expect from a book of this type is that I learn something and have my confirmed biases challenged. It's a nice-to-have if it's also entertaining. Five stars on all counts. On that last, I appreciate how hard that can be, having been invited to write a book many years ago and abandoning it upon reading my own manuscript and finding it too boring to read. Thanks, Keith, for bringing your irrepressible good humor and fine command of the language to a sometimes-dry subject.

The more I read of this book, the more it brought back a seminal moment in my early career when I attended a lecture by Dr. John Donovan called "The Computer is Free". That lecture influenced my thinking and descision process over the next five decades of my career in the industry. I sense that this book will provide that sort of persistent insight value for people at an earlier stage of their careers in this wonderful industry.

Beyond the general, I find many of the structural models of the Digital World and the roles of the players to be useful in my own work, so there's something in this book for the grizzled veteran as well. Also, several themes resonated with ones I have held dear as I advise and execute strategies, among them the Leadership and Partnership themes. One of my favorite metaphors in the former is that of the Able Pilot from Eileen C. Shapiro's "Fad Surfing in the Boardroom", and Keith's observations and advice in this quarter are evocative of that metaphor. The work of Womack and Jones on Lean Thinking and Seeing the Whole Value Stream are very supportive of Keith's discussion of Partnership.

All-in-all, this book is one of which it will be difficult, after reading it, to remain neutral on its major points, but that's the point, isn't it? Few of us have access to the thought-leaders in the industry, and few of them share their thoughts so widely, so I'd recommend you not squander this rare opportunity--buy and read this whole book!

Amazon.com Review
Author Scott Russell Sanders has written numerous award-winning books (including Staying Put and Secrets of the Universe) about the environmental and moral crises of the late 20th century--inspiration and fuel for all who care about the state of the world. Well, almost all. On a backpacking trip in the Colorado Rockies, he learns he has passed on to his teenage son Jesse not hope, but a paralyzing unease.

"You make me feel the planet's dying and people are to blame and nothing can be done about it," Jesse tells his father. "Maybe you can get by without hope, but I can't. I've got a lot of living still to do. I have to believe there's a way out of this mess. Otherwise what's the point? Why study, why work--why do anything if it's all going to hell?"

Sanders, taking his son's questions as seriously as any environmental quandary, sets out to locate and write about the sources of his own modest optimism. These elegant, carefully polished essays slide one into the other as smoothly as the joints of a craftsman's chair. In chapters such as "Wildness," "Body Bright," "Fidelity," and "Simplicity" Sanders calls to mind the writing of American Transcendentalists as well as Wendell Berry's essays on faith and community. He praises the bonds of family, the wildness of nature, "the lightness and purpose" of simplicity. It's a thoughtful, encouraging book for anyone who has ever found themselves wondering, Why bother? --Maria Dolan

From Publishers Weekly
In these wise and luminous essays, Sanders takes on big themes: living a centered life, our relation to animals and to nature, the survival of human values in our greed-driven commercial culture. The leitmotif is his not-quite-extinguished hope for a livable, sane world offering people a decent future?a hope he nurtures despite the ecological devastation, family breakdown and moral decay he sees. Notable among these 15 adventurous essays are "Skill," a meditation on the life-enhancing use or the misuse of one's innate talents; "The Way of Things," an attempt to reconcile modern cosmology with ancient beliefs in a divine creator; "Body Bright," a Blakean call for cleansing the doors of perception, reconnecting with the planet and our fellow creatures; and "Fidelity," which explores marriage as an arena for the fulfillment of desire. The thread through this labyrinth of ideas is Sanders's account of backpacking in the Colorado Rockies with his son whose optimism tempers the fatherly pessimism. Although these beautifully written pieces are reminiscent of Wendell Berry's essays in their economy, grace and moral passion, Sanders projects his own distinctive voice, at once recognizably Midwestern (he's from Indiana by way of Ohio) and universal. From Booklist
A small, bright arrowhead of a book: carefully hewn, piercing, balanced; betraying in its form its very substance. Veteran writer Sanders wanted to find a way to tell his children that despite ecological degradation, despite war, despite all that we know to be wrong about contemporary life, that there is hope, and that hope burns fiercely. He does so in a series of essays, some of which take place while he is hiking with his teenage son in the Rockies; others are set at home in Bloomington, Indiana, or in London. One of the ways Sanders offers hope is through the prism of his family: he and his wife, their son and daughter, the parents of his son-in-law, and his mother form the nucleus of a web of relationships kept close by chosen proximity and active care. In "Beauty," he makes so lovely a comparison of his daughter's shining beauty on her wedding day to the beauty of physics and the cosmos as to take the breath away. In "Skill," he makes the building of a stair railing a poem to his mother and to the skill of the welder who makes it a paean to good work well done. Sanders' pleas for simplicity and attachment are reminiscent of others, notably Wendell Berry, but his particular, urgent voice wields that arrowhead of hope into the hearts of his children, his students, and his readers. I found this one of the best books I have read in a long time
By Clare Hallward
I found this one of the best books I have read in a long time. I used to always read the articles in Orion written by Scott Russell Sanders, which is the reason I ordered the book, I have since given it to three different friends and plan to give it to more..

I really resonate with his articulation of finding hope in wildness. This profound faith in nature is enormously reassuring, particularly at this time when we are compelled to face the damage we have wrought on the natural world with our assumption that it is all there for our use.

I would highly recommend this book.

Hope and staying true
By Laina M. Gerace
How can you maintain hope in the midst of environmental degradation, waste, and human callousness? While not ground breaking, this is a thoughtful, beautifully written book about life's values and staying true to nature. I loved the chapter on fidelity. The author's relationship with his teenaged son while camping and hiking is both humorous and touching. A very good read!

ALL THAT A READER COULD HOPE FOR
By A Customer
Here is a father who takes his son's world seriously. We can learn by his tales the power of passing wisdom along kindly and eloquently, while at the same time listening with attentiveness to the concerns of the future. Because the author is willing to learn from a younger generation, we as readers may learn along with him. He also has lessons of his own, and these are presented respectfully. This book is honest, funny, entertaining, and inspiring without being heavy-handed; a wonderful dose of urgent optimism and a communication between present and future, father and son, writer and reader.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015: When naturalist and falconer Helen Macdonald lost her beloved father, she “thought [her] world was ending.” Seems apropos, then, that her journey from crippling grief to something resembling grace is on the wings of another deadly bird of prey--the notoriously prickly, and murderous, goshawk. In H Is for Hawk, you will meet Mabel, not your typical bloodthirsty specimen, as she is trained to hunt like the goshawks of yore. It is this brash, slightly mad undertaking that wrenches Macdonald free from despair, and brings her to a place where she can begin again. Doesn’t sound like your kind of thing? You’d be surprised. Macdonald’s gorgeously wrought prose holds you in thrall from the first page, and provides something akin to the escape, and salvation, that nature provides her. In ‘Hawk’ you will also learn about the famed Arthurian novelist T.H. White, a kindred soul to Macdonald in certain ways. One of the things that endeared him to her was his “childish delight” with all things wild, something you’ll be hard-pressed not to experience as soon as you tap into this tome. –Erin Kodicek

"Breathtaking . . . Helen Macdonald renders an indelible impression of a raptor’s fierce essence—and her own—with words that mimic feathers, so impossibly pretty we don’t notice their astonishing engineering." —Vicki Constantine Croke, New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"Helen Macdonald’s beautiful and nearly feral book, H Is for Hawk, reminds us that excellent nature writing can lay bare some of the intimacies of the wild world as well. Her book is so good that, at times, it hurt me to read it. It draws blood, in ways that seem curative. . . . [An] instant classic." —Dwight Garner, New York Times

"Extraordinary . . . indelible . . . [it contains] one of the most memorable passages I’ve read this year, or for that matter this decade . . . Mabel is described so vividly she becomes almost physically present on the page." —Lev Grossman, TIME

"Captivating and beautifully written, it’s a meditation on the bond between beasts and humans and the pain and beauty of being alive." —People (Book of the Week)

"One of the loveliest things you’ll read this year . . . You’ll never see a bird overhead the same way again." —Jason Sheeler, Entertainment Weekly

"[A] singular book that combines memoir and landscape, history and falconry . . . it is not like anything I've ever read . . . what Macdonald tells us so eloquently in her fine memoir [is] that transformation of our docile or resigned lives can be had if we only look up into the world." —Susan Straight, Los Angeles Times

"Had there been an award for the best new book that defies every genre, I imagine it would have won that too. . . . Coherent, complete, and riveting, perhaps the finest nonfiction I read in the past year." —Kathryn Schulz, New Yorker

"The art of Macdonald’s book is in the way that she weaves together various kinds of falling apart—the way she loops one unraveling thread of meaning into another. . . . What’s lovely about [it] is the clarity with which she sees both the inner and outer worlds that she lives in." —Caleb Crain, New York Review of Books

"One of the most riveting encounters between a human being and an animal ever written." —Simon Worrall, National Geographic

"Assured, honest and raw . . . a soaring wonder of a book." —Daneet Steffens, Boston Globe

"An elegantly written amalgam of nature writing, personal memoir, literary portrait and an examination of bereavement. . . . It illuminates unexpected things in unexpected ways." —Guy Gavriel Kay, Washington Post

"To categorize this work as merely memoir, nature writing or spiritual writing would understate [Macdonald’s] achievement . . . her prose glows and burns." —Karin Altenberg, Wall Street Journal

"Dazzling." —Kate Guadagnino, Vogue

"Unsparing, fierce . . . a superior accomplishment. There’s not a line here that rings false; every insight is hard won . . . Macdonald has found the ideal balance between art and truth." —David Laskin, Seattle Times

"One of the best books about nature that I've ever read. Macdonald's wonderful gift for language and her keen observations bring pleasure to every page." —Karen Sandstrom, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"[With] sumptuously poetic prose . . . there is deft interplay between agony and ecstasy, elegy and rebirth, wildness and domesticity, alongside subtle reminders about the cruelty of nature and our necessary faith in humanity." —Malcolm Forbes, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"One of a kind . . . Macdonald is a poet, her language rich and taut. . . . As she descends into a wild, nearly mad connection with her hawk, her words keep powerful track. . . . [She] brings her observer's eye and poet's voice to the universal experience of sorrow and loss." —Barbara Brotman, Chicago Tribune

"A heart-poundingly good read." —Helen W. Mallon, Philadelphia Inquirer

"Incandescent . . . glorious, passionate, and heartbreaking." —Sy Montgomery, Orion

"A triumph." —Nick Willoughby, Salon

"The hawk-book's form is perfect. It prickles your skin the way nature can when you are surprised by an animal in your path. Some books are not books but visitations, and this one has crossed its share of thresholds before arriving here, to an impossible middle perch between wilderness and culture, past and present, life and death." —Katy Waldman, Slate

"A genre-busting dazzler of a book, worthy of the near-universal accolades that it's received so far." —Elisabeth Donnelly, Flavorwire

"Extraordinary . . . Macdonald elegantly weaves multitudinous and extremely complex issues into a single work of seamless prose." —Lucy Scholes, The Daily Beast

"The echoes of myth in Macdonald’s writing, however subtle and unobtrusive, lend her book an emotional weight usually reserved only for literature, and a grace only for poetry. But this is one of the book’s great achievements: to belong to several genres at once, and to succeed at all of them." —Madeleine Larue, The Millions

"[Macdonald’s] writing—about soil and weather, myth and history, pain and its slow easing—retains the qualities of [her hawk] Mabel's wild heart, and the commanding scope and piercing accuracy of her hawk's eye." —Joanna Scutts, Newsday

"Brutal yet redemptive . . . a real stunner." —Alexis Burling, The Oregonian

"Gorgeous." —Diane Rehm, The Diane Rehm Show

"A wonder both of nature and of meditative writing." —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air with Terry Gross

"To read Helen Macdonald's new memoir is to have every cell of your body awake and alive." —Robin Young, Here and Now

"In this profoundly inquiring and wholly enrapturing memoir, Macdonald exquisitely and unforgettably entwines misery and astonishment, elegy and natural history, human and hawk." —Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review)

"An inspired, beautiful and absorbing account of a woman battling grief—with a goshawk. . . . Writing with breathless urgency . . . Macdonald broadens her scope well beyond herself to focus on the antagonism between people and the environment. Whether you call this a personal story or nature writing, it's poignant, thoughtful and moving—and likely to become a classic in either genre." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"A unique and beautiful book with a searing emotional honesty, and descriptive language that is unparalleled in modern literature." —Costa Book Award citation

"H is for Hawk is a work of great spirit and wonder, illuminated equally by terror and desire. Each beautiful sentence is capable of taking a reader’s breath. The book is built of feather and bone, intelligence and blood, and a vulnerability so profound as to conjure that vulnerability’s shadow, which is the great power of honesty. It is not just a definitive work on falconry; it is a definitive work on humanity, and all that can and cannot be possessed." —Rick Bass

"A lovely touching book about a young woman grieving over the death of her father becoming rejuvenated by training one of the roughest, most difficult creatures in the heavens, the goshawk." —Jim Harrison

"In addition to being an excellent memoir of loss and grief, H is for Hawk is a wonderful exploration of how birds of prey can function as metaphor to produce art and a roadmap for human lives. Read it and enrich your life." —Dan O’Brien

"Rich with the poetry of ideation, the narrative flows through the author’s deeply textured story of personal loss like a mountain wind, swirling seamlessly through fields of literature, biology, natural history, and the art of hunting with hawks. Readers might do well to absorb this book a bite at a time—but be prepared for a full meal." —Lynn Schooler

"A beautiful book on so many levels. Macdonald fearlessly probes each facet of grief and traverses its wilderness to reach redemption. But most beautiful of all is the complex, layered bond that builds between her and Mabel, her hawk. Who would have guessed that human and bird could share so much?" —Jan DeBlieu

"In this elegant synthesis of memoir and literary sleuthing . . . Macdonald describes in beautiful, thoughtful prose how she comes to terms with death in new and startling ways." —Publishers Weekly

"A dazzling piece of work: deeply affecting, utterly fascinating and blazing with love . . . a deeply human work shot through, like cloth of gold, with intelligence and compassion—an exemplar of the mysterious alchemy by which suffering can be transmuted into beauty. I will be surprised if a better book than H is for Hawk is published this year." —Melissa Harrison, Financial Times

"More than any other writer I know, including her beloved [T.H.] White, Macdonald is able to summon the mental world of a bird of prey . . . she extends the boundaries of nature writing. As a naturalist she has somehow acquired her bird's laser-like visual acuity. As a writer she combines a lexicographer's pleasure in words as carefully curated objects with an inventive passion for new words or for ways of releasing fresh effects from the old stock. . . . Macdonald looks set to revive the genre." —Mark Cocker, Guardian

"A talon-sharp memoir that will thrill and chill you to the bone . . . Macdonald has just the right blend of the scientist and the poet, of observing on the one hand and feeling on the other." —Craig Brown, Daily Mail

"What [Macdonald] has achieved is a very rare thing in literature—a completely realistic account of a human relationship with animal consciousness. . . . Her training of Mabel has the suspense and tension of the here and now. You are gripped by the slightest movement, by the turn of every feather. It is a soaring performance and Mabel is the star." —John Carey, Sunday Times

"A well-wrought book, one part memoir, one part gorgeous evocation of the natural world and one part literary meditation . . . lit with flashes of grace, a grace that sweeps down to the reader to hold her wrist tight with beautiful, terrible claws. The discovery of the season." —Erica Wagner, Economist

"The magnificent H is for Hawk [has] grabbed me by its talons . . . [it’s] nature writing, but not as you know it. Astounding." —Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller

"It sings. I couldn’t stop reading." —Mark Haddon, author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and A Spot of Bother

"This beautiful book is at once heartfelt and clever in the way it mixes elegy with celebration: elegy for a father lost, celebration of a hawk found - and in the finding also a celebration of countryside, forbears of one kind and another, life-in-death. At a time of very distinguished writing about the relationship between human kind and the environment, it is immediately pre-eminent." —Andrew Motion, author of In the Blood

"A deep, dark work of terrible beauty that will open fissures in the stoniest heart. . . . Macdonald is a survivor . . . she has produced one of the most eloquent accounts of bereavement you could hope to read . . . A grief memoir with wings." —The Bookseller

"A book made from the heart that goes to the heart . . . It combines old and new nature and human nature with great originality. No one who has looked up to see a bird of prey cross the sky could read it and not have their life shifted." —Tim Dee, author of The Running Sky

"The most magical book I have ever read." —Olivia Laing, author of The Trip to Echo Springs

Challenging, mesmerising, poetic
By roz morris
Some of my favourite books have been memoirs of a challenging relationship with an animal - Jane Shilling's Fox in the Cupboard, Gavin Maxwell's otter oeuvre. H is for Hawk belongs alongside them.
If that description 'relationship with an animal' sounds fluffy or cosy to you, think again. These animals aren't pets. They are forces to be negotiated with, embodiments of the wild that pitch you into a different way of life and living. You don't invite an otter, a horse or a goshawk to be your friend. You go to their world. You tune into their mind, their instincts, their priorities, their joys, their fears - and in so doing, you find the places where you are wild yourself. And that wildness doesn't mean uncomplicated freedom. Its values have little in common with human concerns. It is a stripped-away state of being, a universe of survival and struggle, where trust might be life or death.
In H is for Hawk, Helen Macdonald's journey has added significance. She acquired her goshawk when in the depths of mourning after her father died suddenly. So the hawk is a voyage into a land of death, for not only is her hawk - who she names Mabel - red in tooth and claw, she is a mysterious, highly tuned instrument of death. The only fluffiness in this book is the down on the new-born chicks that are Mabel's staple food.
Macdonald does not shy away from this. A lifelong falconer, she defines her world early in the book, banishing any romantic notions of the falconry sport when she writes of a hawk 'murdering a pigeon'. In the same spirit, this book is raw in emotional tone too. As we see what hawks do, we see what grief does. It strips the world to a race of life and death, to basic needs, to negotiations with a creature that does not understand words or language but operates in a key of hunger, speed and instinct. Mabel has to be kept on a careful edge of hunger and satiation in order to hunt and fly. If Helen feeds her too much she won't have the appetite or prowess to perform. Too little, and she becomes desperate and aggressive.
And despite her falconry experience, Macdonald finds the training a harrowing process. Establishing a relationship with this creature is an ordeal of patience, nerves, and a challenge to everything she finds certain in her life - which, in her bereaved state, is very little.
As well as a passage through the valley of mourning, this book is also an exploration of a talismanic work from Macdonald's own past, The Goshawk by TH White. She first read it as a child, and was appalled by White's apparent ignorance, clumsiness and cruelty as his time with his hawk did not go well. Nevertheless, she has read it to shreds over the years, first because there were few books for a falcon-mad girl to read, but latterly because she saw something else. It wasn't about hawks, it was about a man, a homosexual, emotionally scarred man who was struggling to tame his own nature. Parts of her narrative examine White's life, decoding this figure whose book had been such a presence from her childhood days. And just as White was destabilised by his experience taming hawks, Macdonald finds herself pushed to desperation. Taming the bird becomes the centre of her life, and not just for its own sake. It is a rite of reckoning, of approaching a more inaccessible, unavoidable inner process.
I haven't yet mentioned Macdonald's prose - and I must. It is sublime, haunting, transforming, written with the heart of a poet. I could quote the entire book if I started picking choice passages, so I'll make do with just this, her description of walking the fields with Mabel flying behind her 'like a personal angel'.
And so this book will stay with you, as a challenging, mesmerising messenger.

A remarkable experience for all nature-lovers
By Jean Gill
This promised to be my kind of book; grief and healing through immersion in the natural world, specifically through training a goshawk. Add to these ingredients a parallel rediscovery of T.H.White's own book on training a bird of prey, 'the Goshawk' (which I haven't read but as 'The Once and Future King was my favourite book throughout adolescence, I knew a little about the writer). I wasn't disappointed.

Beautifully written, this is a book to savour, to read and re-read, slowly. I lived through every moment of frustration and breakthrough in training Mabel. I loved the wealth of falconry detail and appreciated Helen Macdonald's sharp analysis of 'the baggage' in all the advice. Sexism, philosophy, animal rights and - above all - death: this passionate adventure in the company of a wild creature raises some big questions and offers only the experience itself in response.

I am still thinking about the book; about the egotism of extreme grief, about the way we bring our own beliefs and emotions to our relationships with 'animals', and about the falconry training methods themselves. As I say, this is my kind of book; one of the best I've read this year, perhaps one of the best ever.

Mending the Scars
By Roger Brunyate
I almost never read non-fiction; I am not sure I know how to appraise it. But I can recognize good writing. Try this: second page of the book, Macdonald saying that few people will have seen a hawk making a kill… "But maybe you have: maybe you've glanced out of the window and seen there, on the lawn, a bloody great hawk murdering a pigeon, or a blackbird, or a magpie, and it looks the hugest, most impressive piece of wildness you have ever seen, like someone's tipped a snow leopard into your kitchen and you find it eating the cat." Or again, on the next page: "Have you ever watched a deer walking out from cover? They step, stop, and stay, motionless, nose to the air, looking and smelling. A nervous twitch might run down their flanks. And then, reassured that all is safe, they ankle their way out of the brush to graze." Such a simple direct style, almost conversational. And then, out of nowhere, she slips in the extraordinary image of the snow leopard, or the unexpectedly perfect verb, "ankle." Helen Macdonald, naturalist, historian, research fellow at Cambridge, writes in the great tradition of British nature writing, with a keen eye and fine-point pen. I doubt I will see writing this good again this year, whether in fiction or non-fiction.

On one level, Macdonald's book is the record of a season spent training a goshawk that she names Mabel. She is no stranger to falconry, having been fascinated by birds since she was a child. As a historian, she has read all the literature on this aristocratic sport. She has trained sparrowhawks and falcons from her late teens. But the goshawk is larger and rarer, with a reputation for being both more dangerous and more temperamental. She orders one from Northern Ireland and meets the seller off the boat on the bleak Scottish coast. "I grabbed the hood from the box and turned to the hawk. Her beak was open, her hackles raised; her wild eyes were the colour of sun on white paper, and they stared because the whole world had fallen into them at once." The saga of her attempt to enter into some kind of relationship with this bird -- patient waiting, sleepless nights, small triumphs, and devastating setbacks -- reads as an emotional roller-coaster described with the precision of a scientist. Yet what she is describing is herself as much as the bird; at times, she virtually becomes the goshawk, seeing the world through her eyes, losing the ability to communicate with other human beings.

The book is also a halting dialogue with the souls of two men, both dead. One is her father, a news photographer whose sudden death sends her into a tailspin; the book might almost be called "The Year of Magical Hawking." I found it just as powerful as Joan Didion's memoir and, for me at least, much closer to home. It is clear that this father-daughter relationship must have been an extraordinary one; the boy who would attempt to bring some order to the destruction of WW2 by obsessively listing the planes returning to Biggin Hill now teaching his daughter the patience required to observe the other kinds of aerial fighters, but also the wonder and variety of the earthbound world all around her.

The other man is the English writer T. H. White, who would become famous for his recreations of the Arthurian legend in THE SWORD IN THE STONE and THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING. In between quitting his job as a prep-school master and achieving fame as an author, White moved to a cottage in the country and bought a goshawk which he attempted to train, writing about it many years later in his book THE GOSHAWK. It is, however, a book about a falconer who does everything wrong, treating the bird with an unintentional cruelty that leads only to failure. But Macdonald looks beyond the failure to the psychopathy behind it, the tragedy of a lonely boy treated cruelly by his colonial parents and cane-wielding schoolmasters to the point where he abhors violence yet lacks examples of love with which to replace it. Her portrait of White is extraordinarily perceptive, but it is her own life she must deal with. And here at least, she begins to succeed, as in this final quotation, from late in the book:

"I put White's book on the shelves, make myself a cup of tea. I'm in a contemplative mood. I'd brought the hawk into my world and then I pretended I lived in hers. Now it feels different: we share our lives happily in all their separation. I look down on my hands. There are scars on them now. Thin white lines. One is from her talons when she was fractious with hunger; it feels like a warning made flesh. Another is a blackthorn rip from the time I'd pushed through a hedge to find the hawk I thought I'd lost. And there were other scars, too, but they were not visible. They were the ones she'd helped mend, not make."

I want to help by describing exactly what is in this book, it is a surprising wealth of info for both sides of the fence
By Mia Walters
I don't know if anyone else has done this yet, but this is a detailed breakdown of what is in this book. It is more information than I ever expected, in a format that is sectioned down in consistent and easy to read and reference. Personally, this is one of the best investments I made prepping for my brand new role as a mother. I bought it in my second trimester. I poured through it making notes and highlighting as I went. Dr Sears IS pro-vaccine, yet he writes from a neutral stand point giving you facts. But he is not here to tell you to get vaccines, rather to guide you in making the right choices for you! I'm pretty sure those that gave one star are those that have not even read a word of this book, but are rather so adamantly against just the idea of people not vaccinating that they must discredit a wealth of knowledge that benefits ALL parents and children.
It starts with the current to date vaccine schedule chart. He then goes over each vaccine in order, each vaccine being their own chapter, and following a consistent format per chapter. The history of the disease. The description, likelihood of getting it, and the statistics including the risk factors involved for your child should they contract it, the short term and potentially long term outcome or damage, and the mortality rate. So basically the risks of not getting the vaccine. Followed by the risks of getting the vaccine. Common immediate reactions, more significant risks which can be different according to each company that makes the vaccine. (These are all based off of case studies and statistics). The different versions that may be made as a single disease vaccine, or as a combination vaccine, which also depending on the maker. Single and Combo are both gone over thoroughly. All known side effects and their likeliness per maker of the vaccine, in past versions and current ones, the ingredients and specific amounts of things like aluminum and formaldehyde. Aluminum being especially important because if your pediatrician is using certain ones that contain higher levels, you would not want to get them at the same time as another with mid to high aluminum levels. Meaning you might want a different brand for one, or if that's not an option for you, wait until the next visit for the other vaccine containing aluminum, thus keeping levels in your child lower and safe. Some contain eggs, which your child may be allergic to. If there is a particular maker with risks that aren't worth taking the chance, he will tell you that he doesn't recommend that certain brand/combo for that vaccine- not to be confused with not getting one all together. At the end of each of those chapters, he weighs in. Recommending whether this is one he personally believes you really shouldn't skip, or whether it's one that is not really necessary in scenarios such as a breastfed child who is not in daycare until a certain age. Whether the vaccine is given primarily as protection for the child, or more as protection for someone exposed to the child, with the child simply being an unaffected carrier. Like being a potential risk around a pregnant mother. If you are uncomfortable with following the recommended schedule of what and when, he has chapters at the end that help you with a delayed or selective schedule, or customizing your own.
Does this help you realize how important this book is? And why we as parents should take the responsibility of knowing what is injected in our child and why?

If you want to make informed decisions about vaccines, this is your book.
By joel5270
Our Doula recommended this book while we were preparing for birth our new LO.

Love this book, informative and unbiased - a pro-vaccine doctor offers research and background on all current AAP recommended vaccines, their purpose, reasons one might be concerned, and his own opinion. Info on every vaccine is organized consistently for easy reference and comparison throughout the book. My wife and I are children of the 80's when only 3 vaccines were typically given to babies. Now it is more than 4 times that amount. As an example, for some vaccines, the brand of the vaccine can make the difference between certain ingredients which some folks may feel strongly about. My favorite part of the book is Dr. Sears alternative vaccine schedules, for folks with different desires for vaccinating their kids. We want our child to get all the vaccines, just not all at the same time - so we are going to follow the schedule that stretches out the timeline to get most important vaccines first, then get others as the child grows (but before they are likely to be at risk for that particular disease -HPV, Hep B, etc.)

Dr Sears presents the information in a thorough, unbiased way that will let you and your partner have make an informed decision about your child's vaccinations.

Thank you Dr. Sears for writing this book
By A. Young
I enjoyed this book for the following reasons.
1) Just the facts folks, although Dr. Sears vaccinates children in his practice he is not pushy about his opinions. Instead he presents the facts about each disease and the vaccine.
2) Liked to see for each vaccine why some parents say yay while others say nay.
3) Nice to see actual schedules for delayed or selective vaccines.

This is just what I was looking for, no need to use scare tactics on either side just give me the facts.
